That made me chuckle. I suspect that Philip would be the last to claim DP immortality. If you leave the camcorder on auto and shoot for SD delivery, it’s unlikely that the EX1 would give you too much of an advance over your current set-up. Philip couples learning the capabilities of his camera inside and out, shooting with the 35mm adapter, a learned/natural sense of composition and structure, and creative CC in post to deliver what he does. It’s not that a lot of us couldn’t do the same, it’s just that many of us don’t. It ain’t magic, but it may in its totality be close to rocket science. (g)

RE: The Image Stabilization thingy. My question to all of you would be, “Could this be an example of wobble induced by the rolling shutter?” Were the shots where this occured subject to considerable vibration of one sort or another, which supposidly sets this phenomenon off?

That ought be easy enough to check rather than just suspecting? Do 10 seconds each way shooting at anything that moves in some detail and compare the files.

I’d settle for a firmware update or EX1A that clears up some of the issues. I’m expecting more a big brother shoulder-mount version long before a successor, a big brother with the same internal quality, more and less fiddly switches, TC I/O, i.e., an ENG version that’s quicker to operate on the run. It would probably cost 60-80% more. Not that I want one. Much of the beauty of the EX1 to me is image quality rivaling cameras 3-5 times as costly at a size and weight that enables support options like Steadicam that are 2-3 times less costly than for a heavier, bulkier camera. You sacrifice a little speed with the EX1 vis-a-vis a more traditional camcorder, but in return you get the better of several other worlds.
Quick question: The Petroff 4×4 2-stage on rails? What’s it made of? Plastic or Aluminum? I ran into this mostly plastic possible option for Matte Box. Dunno if it would work well but it’s less than half the cost of the Petroff:

Later I’ll experiment with shoulder mount extensions, but the viewfinder will still be an issue.”
There are options out there for shoulder extensions that offset the camcorder so that you can use the viewfinder, but that still leaves you with a lot of weight on your fore arms. The only logical solution for extended handheld use to me short of a Steadicam rig is something like the Varizoom DV Media Rig where weight is born partially on the shoulder, but even more on the hips and your hands are pretty much free to guide and manipulate the camera without arm strain:

I don’t know FCP at all, but may need to interface with it sometime. Can I assume that Deepak should follow your methodology up to but not including dropping into a DV timeline and rather drop into a 601 uncompressed timeline, render and play out to his D-Beta deck?
