They could have an old version of Avid. Any version of Media Composer since 3.x should have no problem importing the MXF files from EX (current version is 4.x). That would be my first question.

I use the tiffen, but only when I have to – I do not leave it on. Works great. Have not noticed any color artifacts as mentioned, but it only makes sense to keep the number of air-glass surfaces to a minimum for sharpness. Aside: I actually left it off intentionally once because the “brown” black helped separate the subject from the black background when I didn’t have a backlight. Go figure.

You don’t really need a U1, you can read from the card or from a copy of the card on a portable drive, etc. and pull stills easily from clips using Clip Browser. They’re saved as .bmp files which you can then open in PS and tweak, then save in whatever format you need. Here’s an example (crunched to be under the 500k limit):

Well I think I know where you’re going with this – using the CB to confirm your suspicion of focus drift. So I did exactly as you described, and using “acquisition” saw absolutely no change in focus numbers throughout, shooting all manual no PP, at 3 different focal lengths from same distance, turning camera off then on then starting over. So it may be worse than a nightmare – with a nightmare you wake up and it’s OK. This may mean another trip to Sony. As Craig and Jay said, in the end check it on a good monitor. Good luck!
[edit] Forgot to mention the gamma setting stayed on “STD3” no matter what.

I had the opposite problem with my EX1 – stopped working from the Sony batteries, but worked fine from anything plugged into the external power input. Sony replaced the power board (under warranty, took couple of weeks). HTH.
