“Spray-painting” matte
Posted by Bronwyn Lamarque on April 16, 2010 at 6:11 amI need to create video that is being “spray-painted” on top of another video layer. How do I do this? It’s “spray-painting” on okay with the matte, I just can’t see the video on the layer below. (It’s basically supposed to be a PIP done with a matte instead of a square.)
Thanks!

April 16, 2010 at 3:33 pmNot sure how you have attempted to do this, but the way I would go about it would be to make a spray painting wipe in AfterEFfects. Would be a white solid that I would animate coming in. Render that as a QT with alpha channel and import into avid.
Lay the matte into the timeline, step into it and replace the fill with the video that you want to spray into place.
If you don’t have AE, how are you trying to create this effect?

April 16, 2010 at 3:52 pmCreate the layers as needed in photoshop then just animate masks as desired. The sounf effect will bring it all together.
opening shot in my reel, if it helps:
https://grinnerhester.com/reel.htmlMake one more layer for the stencil and it can really take on a whole new vibe.

April 16, 2010 at 6:58 pmThanks, guys, for your responses.
The video is spray-painting on just fine but can’t see the video underneath, it’s black. On the imported matte/gfx, I’ve inverted the alpha in the fx palette. (The original motion gfx is black with white where the video is being spray painted on.. just FYI. It’s a motion graphic that was pre-done and free on the web. (I am doing a found-objects… micro-budget piece.) But this little alpha is rockin’ my world.. I’m totally perplexed on this one. And I can’t believe I can’t figure it out.
Can I do another matte key and put it over the other video to “reverse” the alpha so the bottom layer of video will show thru? (I’ve tried it but didn’t work… but am wondering if there’s something I didn’t do right.)
Nice reel, btw Grinner. And, yes, your opening is exactly what I need this segment to do.

April 16, 2010 at 9:22 pmcheck you rimport settings. You may have ignored alpha (or forgot to change it back from invert alpha after importing some stills with alphas).
You said you downlaoded this file… sure it has an alpha channel at all?
Try a luma key.

April 20, 2010 at 4:52 amThanks, again, everybody. Have tried inverting, not inverting, and ignoring the alpha. No go. So I don’t think that’s it. I feel really retarded on this one. Never run into it before.
I have attached a FF of the motion gfx area I’m talking about. The black area should be transparent, allowing the first layer of video to show thru. It’s not.
Is there any way I can fix this in the Avid? Just FYI, my top layer is the key (spray-paint effect matte). The next layer down is the stuff that’s being “spray-painted” on and the last layer down is the video bg that’s not showing thru.
I got a one day reprieve on my deadline but this has got to be done before tomorrow a.m… it’s my last thing to do but am totally hung up on it.
