Alright – found a solution already.

The old Option-drag shortcut to automatically link files seemed to work fine. No idea why the link button doesn’t accomplish the same thing, but at least there’s a fix…

    Brilliant! Thank you!

It never occurred to me that the waveform shortcuts were really just modifiers of the track shrink/enlarge commands (as opposed to standalone commands).

This worked perfectly. Mapping Enlarge Track or Reduce Track to a key or button and then adding the Alt/Opt key did the trick.

    I really appreciate the help!!

    Thanks for the replies.

To Glenn’s question – this is a recent install on a new system and OS.

It’s strange, isn’t it, that this functionality doesn’t exist anywhere else in the software? Not in a menu or submenu or context-click or anything? It’s only a keyboard shortcut, and one that is impossible to change?

    Thanks again, Michael!

For the clips in questions, I’ve been trying to manually sync them with the slates/clapboards, and the resulting sync clip is so far off (both played at regular speed and frame-by-frame) that it’s clear there’s some sort of error. I’ll double-check the assigned TC properties (per your #4), but I have a feeling it’s a bug (#5).

The AMA Linking seemed like a good system and a nice parallel to Adobe and FCP, but I’m getting the sense that it’s definitely NOT the way to go with MC. Is that a fair assessment? Should I be making it a point to import/transcode everything, and just avoiding the links?

    I really appreciate the insight!

Thanks a lot, Michael and Eric, for the replies. If you spot any solutions elsewhere, please let me know. I’ll do the same. In my desperate search for a solution, I came across the “AutoSync WTF” thread that you both contributed to. I’m sorry to hear there still hasn’t been a solution.

Thanks, Glenn. The earlier (working) install was NOT 8.10 – it was an earlier version (but I don’t recall what). Can you point me toward “the latest nablet plugins”? I’m not sure how the plugins were installed in our latest update, but I’d love to try again with the correct versions. I really appreciate the response!

I tried a little experiment and had some interesting results. With an existing project, I took one of my nonworking mp4 links, right-clicked it and attempted to “Relink to File”. It worked! It lists the QuickTime Plug-In and H.264 as the video type. When I try to create a fresh link to the SAME file, it fails with the “AMA Plug-In Unable to Provide Compressed Sample” error. Again – this is exactly the same file. But in this case, it lists the Avid Generic Plug-In and AVC Long-GOP Main as the video type. Does this mean Avid is just not recognizing it as the correct type of file? Or something else?

I’ll attach a screenshot, in case that helps.

Also worth noting that this re-link strategy is not working with all of the mp4/h264 files.

August 26, 2012 at 6:07 am in reply to: VIdeo Glitches when exporting AVI’s out of AE CS5

I’ve just encountered the same problem when exporting uncompressed HD AVI files. I’m exporting effects shots from AE for use in a Premiere project. In a bizarre twist, when I export the files and play them back on VLC or Media Player Classic, they seem to play fine. When I subsequently import them into Premiere, they play back on the timeline (and in the Preview Monitor) polluted with video noise/static. After that, when I try the VLC or MPC playback, the noise/static is present. How does that make any sense? No static prior to the Premiere import, but the static is present after the import. And it’s definitely part of the file, showing up at the same time, on the same frames, no matter what playback software I use (but again – only after attempting a Premiere import).

Cindy’s solution worked for me. Exporting to the Desktop (instead of my USB3 external) eliminated the static altogether. Even if I copy the file back to the external and THEN import to Premiere, the static is still gone. So I have a workaround, but I’d still love to know how/why this is happening…

September 15, 2010 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Perpetual Rendering

I assume it’s related to the update, but I think I just found a short-term solution to my problem. Not the prettiest, simplest solution, but it works.

I found that my rendering hangups were pretty unpredictable, but they were always occurring with titles and/or imported graphics. When I re-created those titles and re-imported the graphics, the problem went away.

With a much bigger project, this is probably not the answer. But if you’ve only got half a dozen titles & graphics (as I did here), it’s at least a short-term workaround.
