    That makes sense. Thanks!

  • So, I think I discovered the issue. It’s synchronized clips!

I dropped some 1080 animation codec clips into the 720 timeline, and when I changed spacial conform to “None” (with Scale at 100%), they grew in size to overfill the screen. When I set their scale to 66.67%, they fit the screen perfectly.

So, I imported some 1080 ProRes LT footage from another project into this project and voila, when spatial conform was set to “none,” (and the scale at 100%) the clip grew beyond the size of the project boundaries.

So I thought it was an h.264 issue. So I transcoded the used project clips to ProRes422 and the timeline was still not adjusting. But I’m working with synchronized clips. So on a whim I dropped one of the original 1080 h.264 clips (non-synchronized) and it worked as expected.

So it was the Spatial Conform of the synchronized clips not working correctly when dropped in the timeline.

At least I know I’m not going crazy. 🙂

  • So, I think I discovered the issue. It’s format related. I dropped some 1080 animation codec clips into the 720 timeline, and when I changed spacial conform to “None” (with Scale at 100%), they grew in size to overfill the screen. When I set their scale to 66.67%, they fit the screen perfectly.

It would appear that FCPX has an issue with raw h.264 files as far as spatial conform is concerned.

  • Thanks for your reply Mathieu. I too had thought that once rendered it would be okay, but that isn’t the case. Even the rendered version looks “softer” than it should.

I’m wondering if it’s a bug that setting Spatial Conform to “None” is not resetting the scale percentage to reflect the actual size of the clip relative to the project properties?

  • That’s what I thought. The project was originally 1080, but then I changed the settings to 720.

Okay, I figured it out. In preferences under playback I had “Use original media”. Sorry. Still figuring out FCPX.

    Now I’m getting more confused….

I disconnected the drive that has the original media (which the events folder points to via shortcut links). I wanted to experiment to see what would happen if I tried to transcode proxy media when the original media was disconnected from the drive. When I re-opened FCPX, all the clips now say “missing file.” Which means they were referencing the original media all along. But, my understanding is that as clips are transcoded on import, they are re-linked to the proxy media, which in this case are on a drive that is still connected. Don’t know why the clips are referencing the original media (which is on a drive I disconnected).

Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Thanks. But that doesn’t address the issue of what media will FCPX use to create the new optimized clips. If I duplicate the project w/o unused clips, then optimize the media that’s left (i.e. the USED clips), is FCPX creating optimized media from the proxy media? If so, that’s not good. I want it to create optimized media from the ORIGINAL. But, I didn’t import the original, I imported and had the original transcoded to proxy.

I looked at the Events folder in Finder and noticed that the ORIGINAL MEDIA folder has shortcut links back to all the original files. So it would appear that when transcoding proxy media, it will use the shortcut links back to the original to make new files. Does this sound right to you folks?

I’ve noticed that both the event and the project folders have Render subfolders. Which one represents the rendered files? I’ms assuming the render folders in the project folder. If so, what are the render folders in the Events folder?

Okay. That makes sense. Wow. Very clever. I’ve had the re-adjusting issue in the past when I’ve replaced temporarily low res images with the high res counterparts and everything was off. Nice! Does anyone know if Premiere Pro has that feature?
