I strongly recommend hiring a local comopany to coordinate your shoot. No problem shooting on the streets, but India is a chaotic environment. Just getting from one side of a city to another can be a challenge if you don’t know your way around. I’d recommend traveling very light and hiring elquipment there with the exception of perhaps bringing your own camera if it is small (HDV, EX3 etc…) something that won’t arouse suspicions from customs coming into the country. Either have a Carne for your gear or have your Customs stamp an inventory before you leave. The easier option is to rent everything in India which in a major city shouldn’t be a problem. I was in Mumbai in January 09 and rented everything through a local production company. Since I’m from the US, we used a Sony EX1 and set it to shoot 30 fps. Crew and rental prices are very reasonbale.

Thanks for the info on the Z1. I’m trying to avoid HDV but it will work in a pinch. Yes, the EX1 and EX3 are easily switchable. I’ve rented Z1’s in Europe and India and used them to shoot 30 and 60 fps.
