Interesting take on things from someone who has clearly never been an editor. Some of his arguments are good but he clearly does not understand why some cornerstones of editing practice and procedure are cornerstones in the first place.
Much of what he says applies to people working in one-man shops but has absolutely no relevance to professional editors working in work groups.

Sounds like you need real answers and expert advice, not the conjecture of people who may or may not have experience akin to yours.
Because of that, I’d get hold of someone like ProSoft Data Recovery at https://www.prosofteng.com or Disk Doctors at https://www.diskdoctors.com or OnTrack Data Recovery at https://www.krollontrack.com/data-recovery/
Which one would I recommend? I’d recommend that you search on all of them and check out what users have to say about them and make your decision after a thorough review.
You have one shot at this. If this data is critical, I’d take no chance trying to do it self-serve.
That’s my opinion…

Yes, we could, but you should see how many ways the spam-bots spell and tweak it trying to get it onto the forums, Walter.
And that is why we run looser than tighter.

June 29, 2011 at 12:03 am in reply to: Is the blindness that Apple showed in the FCPX release a portent of Apple’s future? The Seagate of today is — at least according to the #1 NY Times best-selling book ‘The Innovator’s Dilemma’ by Clayton M. Christensen — is not the same Seagate that people think of. It has fought, lost, been bought, had its name assumed and is a name people recognize and so like Quantum, is in use. There is good will associated with the name.
It is much like NewBay buying Millimeter Magazine. Does it exist? yes, but not really. The people are gone and the name is there, but the product is not the Millimeter that people knew over the years.
It’s like buying an RCA or a Zenith television, is it RCA or Zenith? No, those companies are gone but their nameplates live on.
According to what I remember reading in The Innovator’s Dilemma, nearly every one of the major drive companies of the last 30 years or so are gone. But many of them live on in name.
It’s a little off topic but I remember my Dad asking me years ago to buy an American television when I was looking for a new one. So I asked him if he’d like me to buy the Mitsubishi (which was then) built in Santa Ana, California, or the RCA that was built in Japan.
Often there is more going on than many corporate nameplate suggests.

[Chris Kenny] “The part where it makes it literally impossible for anyone to obtain a copy of FCS3 ever again. First sale doctrine means there are a couple of million users who have a copy they have an absolute right to resell to anyone.”
Chris,
I said that the refusal by Apple to sell NEW licenses or to activate NEW licenses for users whose companies were committed to using FCP, is what largely caused most of the problem.
People want to know that they are buying legitimate software that they can build a company on, not pirated copies sold on eBay and show up with a cracked serial number.
You may disagree with that, but I have 16 years of building forums now and watching the way people react and what they react to, and I doubt that there would have been 1/10th the furor had Apple not pulled FCP and FCS from the shelves and refused to activate new licenses.
You can spin that any way that you want to, but them’s the facts, Mac.

[Chris Kenny] ” I mean, yes, Apple has made is harder to get an additional copy of FCS3, but it’s still easier to obtain a copy of FCS3 than to switch to another editing platform.”
Chris: Apple is NOT issuing new licenses for either FCP7 or for FCS3. They are giving RMAs to dealers and will not activate new licenses for anyone that were not already activated.
What part of that do you not understand?

We had a momentary glitch in the code, Michele. (Or perhaps it was a wrinkle in the very fabric of time and space itself, though I’d opt for a code bug.)
Either way, it is fixed now.
Thank you for your feedback and welcome to Creative COW.

June 28, 2011 at 10:17 pm in reply to: Is the blindness that Apple showed in the FCPX release a portent of Apple’s future?[Greg Burke] “I don’t think its a sign of Apple collapsing. (Aren’t they too big to fail?)”
This year, Wall Street is predicting the end of Nokia, the onetime leader in cell phones who held Number One status for years. Experts say that Nokia should be rolled up and put away by this time next year.
Also to go is onetime Number One food franchisor, A&W, who was the first to introduce the concept of fast food and had more restaurants than anyone in years gone by. Today, they are so weak they won’t last the year out.
Sears Roebuck & Co. was once the world’s largest and most respected retailer, they recently bought K-Mart who was once the largest discount retailer. Now? Experts say that Sears/K-Mart will be gone very shortly and that their lifespan will be in months, not years.
General Motors was at one time the largest corporation in the world. Recently, they had to restructure and spun off brands like SAAB, which is in such troubled status that they likely will not introduce 2013 models. Hummer, Pontiac and Saturn were shut down. Oldsmobile was once the largest and oldest continuously running auto nameplate in America. They’ve been gone years, joining Plymouth and others from the Chrysler line-up.
Some of the largest and most trusted names in home electronics, computers, hard drives, etc. — onetime leaders at the top of their respective stacks are now gone, or survive as nameplates only, tacked on to other people’s products for the sake of milking past goodwill. RCA, Zenith, Connor, Magnavox, Sylvania, Packard Bell, Compaq, Seagate, Quantum and many others, are gone — though someone may have picked up the rights to the name at a fire sale somewhere.
Being the leader doesn’t save anyone. It merely gives one the opportunity for survival. But it’s never guaranteed.

[Andrew Landini] “Phillip Hodgetts, Steve Jobs, Randy Ubelos and other names have been removed. Obviously they’re not going to sign. If your name has appeared without approval, you can contact me”
The funniest one is Steven Spielberg, now you know that one’s real because you know that he does all his own editing and would therefore be really concerned about this.
;o)
I just tried to see if my name was on there but each page has to be searched individually and I stopped after about 10 pages because it was just taking too long. Is there to way to search the whole thing at once?
If my name is there, please remove it as I do not want it there. Not because Apple buys advertising, they don’t. I just believe as some here have stated, that this is a case of Apple doing what they feel best for their longterm survival and growth. I remember when everyone flipped because Power Computing and the clone business was axed when Steve came back under Gil Amelio. People swore it would kill Apple. Me, I always believed that the clone business would have done that had they not killed it.
But don’t get me wrong, I think it was an über-bad move on Apple’s part to kill off FCP7 and FCS3.

[Chris Kenny] “The logic you’re describing is flawed. The mere release of FCP X creates no additional material reason to transition to another editing platform. Uncertainly surrounding Apple’s future intentions seems to be the primary driver behind the folks saying they’re going to switch…”
Seriously, Chris, did you listen to John Chay’s remarks before you replied?
It wasn’t the release of FCPX that caused the pros to lose hope and start looking elsewhere.
It was the killing of FCP7 and the removal of FCS3 from the Apple Store that fomented all this backlash.
Apple could have released FCPX and continued to sell FCP7 and FCS3 and I doubt we’d be hearing more more than the typical “When you going to update FCS?” rants. But by killing everything else, they are giving pros little choice in the matter.
Refusing to issue any more FCP7 or FCS3 licenses makes it clear that Apple does not want any more of THIS KIND of business. What part of that are you unable to understand?
Therein lays the rub…
