No, I was NOT referring to the Panasonic P2 as “non-existant” — it was the fact that some here are saying: “Wow, if Sony builds a camera that can use this as yet non-supported flash memory cards then we will have a perfect (but yet) non-existant camera.”

As I said: The P2 is NOT targeting everyone. It’s NOT a one-size-fits-all world — well, not in pro gear anyway…

    That’s what I was saying.

My point is that the P2 is already a defined and nearly ready to ship product. It long passed the point where it could become something other than it will be. Pointing to 32gig cards from Samsung which do not work in the P2 does little but remind me of dear ole Dad’s analogy as to why I call him Dad.

I stayed out on this one hoping to see what others had to say before I jumped in but it looks like the others here have answered this one enough times over the years that they’ve said to themselves: “I ain’t touching this one, let’s see what Boomie sez.” ;o)

    Direct mail works — to a point…

It is not a panacea and is no substitute for attending Chamber of Commerce meetings, joining local service groups and other organisations which can help you meet the players in your area.

That said, you can traditionally get results of 1% when doing a raw first mailing. If the piece is targeted well enough and you are doing a follow-up mailing to the same group you mailed to before — and you do it within 90 days — the numbers go up to 2% to 3% for the subsequent piece. If you follow-up again in another 30 days for piece three, the number can jump again. But most pieces never perform this well as they are not created correctly and targeted with a message that truly connects with the audience for which they are intended.

An expert in direct mail can pull these kinds of numbers but most people get the basic 1% number and then have to try to close deals from among the 1% responding. Experts can work the numbers wherein they will pull between 3% to 5% if everything is done correctly AND they have a strong closer to follow-up on these leads.

Back when I was a kid, my Dad got so tired of my “if I…” and “if only it…” statements that he retorted: “If I could have grown breasts I might have been your Mom but it’s not my job and it wasn’t coded into my wiring so you can call me ‘Dad.'”

    I got his point…

That said, this thread is almost comical… RAID arrays made up of four 2gig solid state memory sticks — and raving of how these non-existant memory-stick RAID drives might power a never-been-announced camera? Am I missing something?

This whole industry is always made up of those who find certain offerings worth the purchase and those who do not.

If you do not like P2, then why hang out and crap on those who do find something worthwhile??? Life’s too short — move on to something else.

P2 never was intended to meet the needs of everyone. It is targeted at a certain type of user who can benefit enough from it today that the cost is in keeping within the realm of profitability of their market. It isn’t for everyone — but it is a first step of this type of technology and so it can hardly be expected to meet the needs of everyone.

    That’s my opinion…

    Great point, Martin.

I once was very good friends with the top manager in the JCPenny chain and he once told me that they did a study in JCPenny Company that showed that it takes six-times the money and effort to win a new customer as it does to make a subsequent sale to an existing customer.

He was a great guy and I learned a lot of things from him.

  • Wesley,

I hqave thrown your account into moderated status and have been going through the MANY forums you posted this question to.

Try this again and I will ban you permanently from the Cow.

Sheesh, what an inconsiderate thing to do…

Yep, I just checked, Frank, and Kathlyn tells me she has an email here from a company that sells law degrees from “…prestigious, non-accredited universities.” But they *are* very prestigious and I know that a degree from Larry’s Law School & Email Degrees Service will look very good above your mantle…

    Mama will be so proud.

[Frank Otto] “Y’know, Ron…if the COW was willing to pay my tuition to law school, I’d be willing to serve as the forum leader, pro bono.”

Wow!#@*?! Pro bono and everything! — you’d really do that?#@!?

Let me look into the piggy bank and see what’s there…

    Hi Bob,

We’d love to add a Media Law forum to the Cow but first we would have to have an attorney willing to participate here. So far, that has not happened and until we get one, adding a Media Law forum would be putting the cart before the horse.

But you suggestion is duely noted and appreciated.

[mccaincow] “However it does have a “feeling” of paid advertising from all who are featured.”

To quote that Chef Paul guy: “I will gar-own-tee” that it is paid advertorial production. No doubt about it.

But that does not take away from the value that you can make of it and there is a reason that Pat Summerall’s advertorials for businesses air year after year. They work. If they didn’t make the companies money who are in them, the show would have ceased long ago.

I do not care on twit if the show just started or has been on for years, if you can get a copy of it and compress it to DVD — you have a calling card far beyond that of your local competitors.

Nearly always in every deal, there is a buyer and a decision maker. They are not always the same person — they may be, but don’t hold your breath waiting for that, as they often are not the same person. In wedding video, the buyer (the one writing the check) may be the mother or the father of the bride and the decision maker (the one getting their way and deciding who they are going to work with) may be the bride. In any case, if I were the one in your shoes, like Chef Paul sez “I gar-own-tee” that I could turn a DVD calling card of my company on their show, Pat Summerall’s or anyone else’s for that matter — into money.

Is it paid advertorial? — it better be. I sure wouldn’t do it for free and I doubt that many here would either. And just as I wouldn’t work for free, I sure would understand the value of anyone else who is going to hand me a product that I can turn into cash by using it.
