The winner was the best editor. :o)
I know some great editors who can make just about any system look good and, conversely, I know some bad editors who could humble the best system out there.
These kinds of shoot-outs are really much more indicative of the editor, than they are of the editing system or platform.
But hey, they make great press. ;o)

That sounds good but it does NOT work and you cannot do the work without assuming legal culpability. The onus is on the creator of the work — the one who actually does the work for hire — and they will not divest themselves of the responsibility with a cute little phrase in a contract. They may make themselves think that they are safe but a lawyer would tell them that they are smoking crack if they think so…
The only way this is not the case is when a video producer is an employee of a company who gives them the work to do and then the responsibility falls on the company that gets the money, not on the employee who performs the work as part of their job.*

I said NOTHING resembling an endorsement that heavy iron will save bad footage and crappy production values.
All I said was that people were writing off the high-end hardware-assisted systems back in the very beginnings of NLE. Later, they began prophesying the demise of cards like AJA, etc., when DV came along in the end of the 90s.
My point was simply this and nothing more: People have been saying for so long that hardware’s days are numbered that I just smile when I hear it again.
“Garbage In, Garbage Out” has always been the order of the day, no matter how expensive your system is — or isn’t.

People have been saying this since Media 100, Radius VideoVision Studio, Immix VideoCube and other early systems were all the rage.
When DV came out, people said that companies like AJA (who made video cards) were on the way out. They aren’t. They are doing better today than they did years ago — even with other newer competitors like Blackmagic, Convergent and others in the marketspace.
There is and will likely always be a place for heavy hardware and enhanced performance that goes beyond the norm.
Don’t write off hardware too soon. ;o)

There are basically a few different “suites” that most people use…
At the top of the food chain, there are the “systems” that are used by people with lots (and I mean lots) of money. These systems include:
- Quantel
- Discreet
- Avid DS
- etc.
Next, down the foodchain come the hardware-assisted suites from both Apple and Adobe, etc., that include cards like:
- AJA Kona, Xena, Io, etc.
- Blackmagic Design Decklink, Eclipse, Multibridge, etc.
- Matrox Axio, MXO, RTX, etc.
- etc.
Then, just below this are the unassisted suites themselves, which include:
- Adobe Production Studio
- Apple Final Cut Studio
- Avid Media Composer, Liquid or other Avid tools
- Sony Vegas
- etc.
The last category run on the computers unassisted and can handle many of the duties in software alone.
If you are on a Mac, then the choices exclude Sony Vegas. If you are on a PC, then the choices exclude Final Cut Studio.

No you can’t. The point is, they will not hesitate to TAKE your money and sit on it — along with that from a bunch of others whose mommies and daddies never taught them that if it’s too good to be true, it probably is — and they will fight you tooth and nail to get it back.
If you are one of the lucky ones, you will get it back. But even then, they will have made money off of using your money — along with all those who mommies and daddies didn’t do their job — drawing interest off the depth of money they’ve collected. (At a few grand per transaction, it quickly adds up.)
If you are like some of the unlucky ones, you will give up and lose it all. Over the years, I have seen one after another confessions of those who lost money to these “somewhat authorised” gray market dealers. (I say somewhat authorised, as they tell you that while they are giving you a great deal, they are also giving you a warranty — one which you will have to travel to Lower Slobotvia to enforce.)
I always chuckle that there are those who will not go to https://www.resellerratings.com and see who their discount dealer really is and what they do to people when they give them their credit cards.
Oh well, Mom & Dad and P.T. Barnum were right: there is indeed one born every minute — and these “dealers” count on it and I am sure they have a poster on the wall behind their phone banks that reads “P.T. was right.”

I thought that you’d like it. I have been listening to OTR since 1991 when they got picked up by IRS Records for a short spell. Their “Patience” CD is an incredible piece of work and if you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. It doesn’t contain this song but it’s brilliant, nonetheless.
