  • [Tim Kolb] “We were movers and shakers with the chamber and the biggest provider of discounted and pro bono non-profit work in our region. Pro-bono work seems like it should get you corporate work as these non-profit agencies are steered by corporate movers and shakers…in our experience all that pro bono work begot more non-profit pro-bono work. Warm fuzzies all around, but not much for bank deposits.”

Amen, Tim. That was what Kathlyn and I found when we were quite active in our area Chamber, Rotary, etc. The pro bono work opened the door for more of the same but nothing else.

When we finally began to make headway, it was because we came up with projects that were our idea and which we produced and sold. One of them was for the local zoo who wanted it to be a pro bono project. We said no that it would be a project under our direction, and that once they approved the spec proposal in writing, it was a green light and we would sell all the advertising in the project and we would keep whatever profits accrued from the project. They wanted them and we said no way. We got the project and did it and kept the money. The zoo and the county got an educational project that could be used in the schools, in civic groups, clubs, etc., to help promote the zoo.

We never went back to pro bono work and instead made our pro bono efforts to help some of our friends and leaders here when they get in trouble. Much more direct and a hell of a lot more rewarding. ;o)

    Have fun, Tim.

I put this here as it opened up a new spin on the same can of worms that better fit a new thread and would generate more discussion as a new thread. Appending it to the thread below would have likely seen this draw little to no interest. (We’ve just been doing this for 12 years now and we have learned a bit about the rhythym and flow of this kind of thing.)

It’s called “balance” and for its meaning, please see Websters or the Oxford dictionary.

  • Me and David, argue? Never! :o)

Wow, David hosting in a COW forum? Hell hath indeed frozen over, it appears. We have been asking David to join the COW Team for years. We enticed him with stories of fame and fortune…

“Instead, they got me writing for Creative COW Magazine and now my sainted Mother thinks I have joined some kind of Hindu cult,” says David.

    We plied him with drink…

“Yeah, right! If you call tap water ‘drink’,” says David.

    We bribed him with money…

“Say what?!#@?!?,” says David. “If you did, I guess the check’s in the mail, right?”

    Exactly, David.

But the one thing he couldn’t resist was when we told him that he could join the COW’s Business forum team…

“Hot damn! Now we’re talking,” says David. “Nick Griffin & Company are my heroes. If they were a band, they’d be Pink Floyd — well, except that no one wears pink. You don’t, do you guys?”

We won’t tell, David. But we do indeed hear that maybe one or two have journeyed to the Dark Side of the Moon. But that is a story for another day.

In the meantime, David Roth Weiss has joined the COW Team. Now *that’s* as good as a Pink Floyd tour or something. Well, almost — except that David doesn’t have any helium filled pigs or all them lasers or fireworks. But he does have a dog and that’s gotta count for something — right, David???

it should be working — unless the thought police pulled it offline by order of the anti-anything traditional committee.
