David’s basics are spot on but the numbers have changed recently. Today, it is possible to get replicated discs in quantities of 300 at places like discmakers.com and I suspect there are others (but I am not sure of them and can’t recommend them).

While speaking of Dutch bands, the following list was submitted by [Bob Zelin] “…here is the quick answer –
After Forever, Delain, Within Temptation, Epica.”A couple of other Dutch bands that I have found recently are Nice Beaver and Ricocher. Ricocher’s “Quest for the Heartland” is interesting with some complex time changes, etc., but like Alan Holdsworth’s albums, the singer is not one of my favorites. But their harmonies help make up for that deficiency.
Nice Beaver also has a singer that I am not overly fond of (I like him even less than Ricocher’s singer) but the music, like many Dutch bands, spans areas and influences that American bands would never touch. Very classical and very complex.
But my favorite Dutch band of all time is and will likely remain Kayak. A great band.

We would give Prince a first name of “The Artist Formerly and Now Once Again Known As.” While this may be daunting for him, it would span a wide area of experience and would open up new vistas and experiential panoramas for both him and our members.
Cher, on the other hand, would find herself with two accounts. One, would be “Sonny’s Cher” — the other? It would herald back to her years as Gregg Allman’s wife and she would be “Cher Allman” (well, except for the parts that are all botox and stuff.) In either case, we wouldn’t let her sing — especially “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” — a song that would herald her irrevocable dismissal from the site.
Madonna, lastly, would be barred from the site on general principle, for using drum machines in her catalog. As a drummer myself, I have always joked that “Otto Matic” on the drums does not count as real music. So, a little-used clause that bans drum machines from the COW would be used.
Now Tim Wilson will have a different opinion as I think he wears a Madonna costume on Halloween — at least that’s a rumor I am just starting…

Yes, updating the email address always flags an account as a new member and requires a link that we send to be clicked to reauthorize the account (in accordance with California’s anti-spam laws, we have to use a double opt-in system).
Unfortunately, we have been wrestling with the new mechanisms to do all the updates, changes to new names, etc., and there have been some things that disappeared during the conversion — most haven’t and the issues are now past.
Thanks for being a part of the COW, Rennie.
If you have any more issues, please feel free to write me directly and I will look into it.

[seamus] “I think you can still be a positive contribution to a forum without being identified. I’m still not convinced otherwise…”
We have never said anything to the contrary. But that is not the issue. The issue is that some people use anonymity as an excuse to do things that they would be far less likely to do if their own name is attached to the statement.
As this site has grown, the problem has exacerbated due to hundreds of thousands of people taking part in the site — with well over a hundred thousand actively posting in the course of a year. Lately, we have seen more and more discourtesy across the forums and we have been trying to close the door on it. But when people can sign up as zkm557 and then, when they are shown the door, they come right back and sign up as zkm558 — it is tough to maintain a sense of community here. So the decision was made to require real names.
Many sites have done this across the net and it is not a great solution but in our research, it seems to work and does indeed filter off much of the traffic from those who want to be trolls and such.
We have no doubt that people can and do contribute using names such as yours, Seamus. Again, I wish that were the point, but it simply isn’t. The point is do we either preserve the sense of community that the COW has had for years, or do we watch it dissipate until one day the site becomes something that none of us wants to take part in?
We do not believe this is a perfect solution. But it is the best solution that we have under the circumstances.
We are not trying to make this an onerous thing for people but the COW’s incredible sense of community must be preserved and so we are taking this step. We hope that you and others will take it with us. If you decide otherwise, we understand that and wish you well, please know that we have appreciated your participation in the meantime.
Thank you,
Best regards,

[Mike Clasby] “At least I’ll get to find out who that “Cow Dog” is. Does he get to keep wearing his ears?”
He’s a dog, he has no last name.
Oh, but he has four legs.

TubeSock is a good program for this. Google it if you haven’t already found something from the link that Floh gave you earlier.

[yikesmikes] “‘yikesmikes’ is to be executed immediately after this post. Real names only. PS. There will be a bonfire for all books authored by “Mark Twain”, “George Eliot”, “Isak Dinesen”. ” J.K. Rowling”, ” Ellery Queen”, etc. etc. etc… somehow they seem less authentic. I don’t like my real name. It sucks.”
God, are you all out of prolixin again, yikesmikes?
;o)
In case you haven’t noticed, Mike, all of the aliases of those now using their real names but who were once aliased users, are showing up in parenthesis behind their real name.
We have actually got quite a few remarks from users who like seeing who is who.
This is a community. In the beginning, it was ALMOST ALL real names and the few that weren’t — David Bogie as “bogiesan” comes to mind — were easily known as to who they were. It was from this root that The COW sprung and it is why so many people loved it.
Accountability was what made the COW so “High Signal, Low Noise” and over the years, more and more aliases have shown up and so has an increase in the noise level. By cutting down on the people that come in and have as their agenda to add little to the boards but their unaccountable opinions, we will cut down on the noise.
We have no doubt that some people will not like the new policy. Oh well, we have never tried to be popular and instead, we do and will continue to do what we feel is right for this community.
Sorry to bum your day.

George,
I’ve been fighting high blood pressure for three years now and sometimes due to it, I admit that I read some people with a bit more invective than they may intend. If I have lumped you into that corner, my apologies, it is a rough job to keep a balance among 500,000 people a month, some who just want to rip others apart, some who come here to help or be helped. Keeping all the players sorted out and remembered perfectly can be quite a job.
I try but it would be a lot easier were I still 30. ;o)
Thanks for your kind words about the COW. They are indeed appreciated.
Have fun, George.

George,
Over the years, I have had few people be so one-sided in their arguments on virtually any issue that seems to go against us. I don’t think that using the word “antagonist” is a far stretch. ;o)
But hey, some of the best things I have ever learned I learned at the hands of my critics, not my friends. (Though I love my friends, he says waving to them.) ;o)
