Steve Wargo believes 24 months and I hate to disagree with him but having watched the P2 forum closely since it went online as but a scrawny calf on trembling legs, I think it’s more 12 to 18 months. (This, based on the rate of growth and the way that it’s accelerated as development and adoption have become more pronounced.)

Unfortunately, there are some people who feel that the Internet is not “real” and that they really only want to focus on magazines. After calling Dick to speak with him, even after telling him that the COW does more traffic than EVERY trade magazine in this industry COMBINED, he really wasn’t interested.
So we recommended him to Videomaker’s owner as he’d be perfect for their very practical nuts and bolts approach. Both Tim and I think that would be a great fit.
Let’s see where he lands. Somebody is sure to grab him.

Thank you, David. It is appreciated.
Like you, I really take offense when people make flippant remarks that “An Apple could do that…” or “Apple rules!” — when the comment has nothing to do with the question being asked and doesn’t give an answer.
But around the COW, Kathlyn and I see far more PC people attacking Mac people than I see Mac people slamming their counterparts.
My point in all this was merely to put my foot down and say that this is not going to happen here. Offhand flippant remarks directed at insulting others simply isn’t going to be tolerated here.
Thanks for making the record straight.

Personally, David, when I read your site you cast ALL iPod users in the same form. Period.
You said it, not me.
Or did I miss the fact that when you insult people you really only mean to insult just a few of them???
Then say so.
But you didn’t. You took a big brush and painted ALL iPod users with the same brush.
So, if I missed something in it all, it’s because I was only reading what you said.
They were your words, not mine.

Wow, you don’t, eh?
If you were one of the people paying the bills around here and were one of the ones who’ve been fighting for years to keep this kind of adolescent bickering off the forums, you just might feel differently. Especially if you had researched the guy and found that his own site contains the kind of PC Fanboy anti-Apple rhetoric that he so casually began using here.
No thanks, I am not a buyer…

Yes, the COW is a whole different beastie, David.
It’s not often that you will get a Mac Rah-Rah on your case around here. In fact, across the COW, it’s more often that we see PC Fanboys. But they too, thankfully, are rare.
We work hard to keep it all off our boards and it’s one of the reasons that we are now insisting on real names in the forums. As the COW has grown to such a huge size, we have to work even harder to keep the site from degenerating with this kind of noise.
The exception to this rule is found in Apple-Only or in PC-only forums. Users from the other camp should avoid these “partisan camps” at all costs.
:o)
But when it comes to tools that span multiple OS platforms, we insist on decorum and respect.

As someone who clearly doesn’t like Apple (from visiting your site after seeing your little slap here in your post), we’re going to ask that you keep your PC Fanboyism out of the COW — just as we ask the Apple Fanboys to do the same.
This site is based on a belief that we could care less if you use Macs or PCs, Apple, Adobe, Autodesk, Avid or Anythingelse. It’s what you DO with the tools that counts here.
So leave the ‘tude at the door when you come here, okay?

December 28, 2007 at 6:11 pm in reply to: digital juice opinions / other recommendations[Tony Noon] “I am actually surprised they don’t have a forum on creative cow.”
We’ll gladly add a forum for Digital Juice just as soon as someone volunteers to host it. Interested? ;o)
I also love the various Juice products, especially the new Sound FX tools and their Juice Drops layered Photoshop files.

Charles,
While I would agree that much of what I’ve seen in Dick’s column has been a rehash, that which is old to some of us is quite new to others. I think it’s that “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” adage thingie.
Using “new” as a yardstick, much of what’s at the COW would be gone. This forum is filled with a lot of tried-and-true ideas that have been around for years. But it’s very valuable.
The trade magazines have been moving towards a more “advertorial” stance for some time now. In fact, Studio’s recent “Tripod” issue read like a giant advertorial issue, with it even extending onto the cover. It was the first time that I can recall seeing advertorial actually showing up on the cover of a magazine.
Companies have to redefine themselves to survive, and this appears to be the direction that many of the trade magazines are following. They must find a formula that helps them survive and from all I can figure out, this seems the tact that many of them are taking.
The less product-based writers like Dick, whose columns seem esoteric held up to the light of advertorial leanings, makes them expendable.
At least that’s my opinion…

December 26, 2007 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Water splashes using After Effects without plugins[Pance Pictures] “I was wondering how you can make a believable water splash and spray (like something dropping or falling in the water) without using any plugins and using only After Effects.”
You can’t.
At least not without an imagination like God and almost as much time on your hands.
