[Gary Chvatal] “If you are still learning it’s not fair to charge them for learning on the job…”

People don’t get paid for learning on the job???

My guys sure expect to.
I knew I was doing something wrong…again.

John,
Nowhere on our policies statement does it say that we GUARANTEE that people’s questions HAVE to be answered — either by the moderators or by anyone else.
The leaders here are volunteers. They are not paid technical support personnel on-staff with Sony software technical support. Did I mention that they volunteer their time???
The point of these forums is NOT to have the moderators hooked up to virtual I.V. spigots from which people here draw answers and drain them of their knowledge.
The point is that the leaders lead but it is the hope of both the moderators and of the COW itself that others will join in with their answers.
Please feel free to post your questions to the official Sony technical support channels.

Hey Ron,
I just played your reel and have to say that it is a lot nicer than the local spots that run in my area of the world. Most local spots I have seen never reach the level of what I see in your reel.
You are right that many advertisers are seeing that free ads are not always a good deal when/if paying for production can produce a spot that generates greater sales and return.
Thankfully, many companies are more concerned about their customer perception and so are willing to pay for commercials, not all (or even the majority, at least in our area) but many.
Just as in your area, it is the network affiliates now that give away the most work. But you can always tell the clients that pay for their production, from those who don’t.
Thanks for your viewpoint, Ron.

[rongerber] “I’d estimate between $450 and $750 for those cable spots in a market your size. The hard thing about local cable is there’s always someone that will do it for less. And your local cable company probably isn’t worried about how much the spots cost only about how much the airtime buy is. In the local cable world, the local commercial is just a vehicle to get to the media buy.”
The bottomline in this, is that the local cable companies will nearly always do it for free. They crank out cookie-cutter spots that for the most part all use the same templates and style. They race through the production and so they are worth everything a client is paying for them — which is usually nothing.
Your production values had better be higher than what is the benchmark set by the cable companies as it’s rough to compete against free, otherwise.

[Abraham Chaffin] “We’re aware of there being some slowdowns at times.”
For those reading this thread later on down the road, please keep in mind that what Abraham refers to is a delay that is measured in seconds, not minutes. We have a battery of servers that make up the COW backbone and we work very hard to keep page download times to a minimum.
When you experience a delay of minutes, it is almost always something happening on your side.
Two things you can do to increase performance if you are experiencing delays is to:
- Turn off Javascript when you surf the COW
- Turn off programs like PeerGuardian and other anti-spyware programs that are over-zealous in trying to protect users from sites that use javascript, etc.
We have been doing this for 12 years now and there are hundreds of thousnads of people who make this site their home. If we were trying to do anything underhanded, they would have left long ago…

[Robert Morris] “Does any site moderator read this?”
Yes, we ALWAYS respond, even multiple admins often respond as is the case here, Robert. Why come in and start insulting people??? Sheesh.
If we have to unplug the ads, we will have to unplug the COW as it costs many thousands of dollars a month to support a venture like this one. Without the ads, you wouldn’t be here as there would be no site here…
[Robert Morris] “I’m surprised more people aren’t complaining about the slowness of the COW.”
Most people that come to the COW, trust the COW. The reason they aren’t complaining is that it ISN’T happening to MOST people here. In fact, it is always no more than a few in the hundreds of thousands who visit this site each month.
The people who come here using anti-spam software like PeerGuardian, etc., experience the issues you talk about due to the fact that we use both javascripts and java in our site. We couldn’t build it without them and programs like PeerGuardian hate these kinds of sites and will always block them.
When we experience slow-downs, they are always measured in seconds. When we get news of people saying it takes MINUTES to load our pages, every time without exception, it has turned out to be these anti-banner programs. If you don’t like the banners, I’m sorry but there would be NOTHING here without them. You do not support the half-million+ people that log-in each month, on nothing but good will and best wishes. The ads make it possible.
The ads are necessary. PeerGuardian hates ads. Therein lies the rub…

Also, Robert, please do keep in mind that those “guardian” programs tend to choke on any site that uses Javascripts or Java in the site. They will almost always sit and stare blankly into space with their thumbs twirling, until in a galaxy far, far away, they finally allow the page to load.
We DO get page load time challenges sometimes but it is measured in seconds, not minutes. When it drags into minutes, it is a sure sign that the guardian programs are the issue.

[Steve Wargo] “And as for the posts, they would be a little more creative but Ron threw me off the COW a few years ago and I had to promise to be a good boy and bite my tongue (or my fingertips) or I couldn’t come back to play. This is, by far, the best forum on the web. It’s easy to navigate and has some of the best of the best both at the top of the page and throughout the entire barn yard.”
Oh come on, Steve. You are a hell of a lot more entertaining with a bit of restraint placed on your ire — it adds a heretofore missing bit of comic edge to your vitriol.
;o)
It’s been an honor to have you here for all these years, Steve. Kathlyn and I are very happy that you are healing up and that you beat the odds after your horrible motorcycle accident. It wouldn’t be the same around here without you.

[stephen] “how relevant is this information and why do so many video websites quote information that isn’t verified.”
Stephen,
Studies have shown that 117% of those surveyed in Chicago during the last election voted. That said, further studies have proven that in Chicago, even the dead turn out to vote.
When it comes to studies, they are usually bankrolled by companies who commission a survey and have a vested interest in the resulting outcome.
I remember a few years ago, SCRI had a survey of this industry that showed the rankings of sites like DMN along with magazines like DV, etc., and how they compared. The funny thing was, Creative COW was nowhere to be seen in the stats comparisons and we were not even down at the bottom rankings.
Why was it funny to us?
We had been for a couple of years or more at the top of the Alexa.com rankings, and were well ahead of the others. These figures have further been proven by 3rd party traffic statistics compilers like compete.com and trafficestimate.com.
There is a new religion on the land…it is called “Studies show…”
Take studies with a grain of salt. (Oh, except when they shine a positive light on Creative COW; then, trust them implicitly — because studies show…)

[Steve Wargo] “Panasonic has bet the bank on P2. Technology is moving on.”
Yes, they have and their sales and market incursion have been at record levels with P2. Also, if some other form of tapeless media proves to be the hands-down winner and there is a marked advantage for both the end-user and Panasonic, they wouldn’t have a hard time switching.
My point is that Panasonic’s sales started taking off radically with the AG-DVX100 series and the P2 cameras have sold very well and they are not having any problem selling them.
I am sure that the new “Baby CineAlta” EX1 is a direct result of how well the P2 sales have been.
Will EX1 sales affect the sales of P2? Quite likely and I think even Panasonic would admit that. But Panasonic has been proving quite markedly that they can take part of a market that was once mostly Sony-only.
The Varicam series and the P2 series have done for Panasonic what they never achieved before. I wouldn’t write them off so easily, Steve.
I am glad to hear you are healing up following your disastrous accident. Both Kathlyn and I wish you all the best in 2008 and hope that you grow even stronger in the days ahead.
