You can learn a lot more about the actual set-up and design by reading Bill O’Neil’s companion (part two) article that he did for Creative COW Magazine’s “Commercials” issue, on page 18.
Click the magazine link in the orange bar above and you will find the magazine PDfs there.

March 23, 2008 at 5:00 am in reply to: admin: Running Windows OS on Macs forum goes live at the COWMy point was to show an example of what is available for PC users that is NOT available for Mac users. Again, that was my point.
And as Michael Hancock points out, Macs are now PCs. Running Windows in addition to the Mac OS is a benefit, not a liability.
To be honest, I use Macs as my main machines. I also use some of them with Windows dual-booting on them, and also have PCs with Windows only — and a bunch of PCs running Linux only. I even have an Xserve running Leopard Server. In the end, I could care less whose OS is on something; me, I just want to get a particular job done and whichever one does that, that is what I am going to use.
Aharon who hosts the new forum is a PC user, hardly someone who would see himself as wearing the #1 Mac Fanboy title. He just began using Macs when they changed to the latest iteration of the Intel architecture.
But yes, you are right, Apple does make great machines — it’s why they cost more and I and others are willing to pay more. (Even though I do use PCs when and where it does make more sense.)
Lastly, when you get around to running Inscriber on a Mac, it will be just as clumsy as it was (to quote you) “on a clumsy PC.” It’s Windows you are running on a Mac, it will still be Windows and will act like Windows. The Mac won’t do a thing to change that — in fact, it merely adds another layer of complexity and issues to the whole thing.
Welcome to the world of dual-boot systems.

At last, someone has given a VALID reason — one that can and does pass the acid test. Figures it’d be a Scotsman.

Here’s just an example of why this is a GOOD thing, from TODAY’s real world example here at the COW: We need to high speed scan thousands of pages of documents for a trademark legal fight we are fighting against someone trying to encroach upon our trademark. We needed a high-speed scanner that can do pages a minute, rather than the typical flatbed scanners that do little faster than a page a minute. We found a Xerox 510 scanner. Mac support? None. Windows only.
Thank God we are not limited to being Mac fanboys and know where a Mac is great but hardly make it our religion. We bought the Xerox 510 and run it under Windows.

[Bruce N. Goren] “It is still worth walking the aisles to see old friends and catch new tech trends that have yet to make it into print or the web. Social networking brings me the BIZ news faster than than broadband. And you can get good deals if you are willing to buy “show specials”.”
NAB *may* get some things before print but before broadband? Hardly. There are very few things that make it to NAB before being announced on the web — an exception is news like the Apple event. But nearly every other manufacturer on the floor has already announced their news before before getting there.
Social networking is *best* articulated as a web phenomenon, not as a tradeshow floor phenomenon.
Show specials? It has been years since anyone I know of had any real show specials. Some of the very small companies do but even they are a small minority of the total on the floor. Show specials used to be a BIG part of NAB about 7 years or so ago. But that trend stopped and the exceptions are rare.

People who are in the broadcast gear market will still be there obviously, but the plethora of peripherally broadcast-related companies (that make multimedia and other gear and software) will be bowing out due to the sheer economics.
I spoke with some of my friends with another of the other Big A Name companies this week who told me that this year they are scaling back their presence at NAB — again — and that they are now talking about not coming back next year at all. We’ll see.
As I said somewhere else, I expect to see NAB end up like SIGGRAPH — which was once huge and many times its present size and scope — in the next three years, eventually ending up with just one large hall (two at the very most) within that time.

[Kyle Self] “everyone seems to have forgotten a long time ago that the B stands for Broadcasters.”
…I didn’t and haven’t forgotten that at all. In fact, in many of my writings on this subject I have said that I fully expect NAB to return to the show that it was 15 years ago when it was a broadcaster’s show.
That is the point of NAB after all. All of our multimedia foray into NAB was just a distraction, one that made sense for a while but is making increasingly less sense for many companies as time goes on.
