The web client isn’t really designed to be used with the workgroup server as being able to log on is one of the main features of the web client compared to the older Live HTML Publisher. You should be able to use the two together if you check the allow anonymous access option on the server control panel and then just press cancel in the log on dialog of the web client.

Try the following steps:

Save the Excel spreadsheet as tab separated text. If necessary, add a row of columns at the top, and maybe add an extra column which contains something that looks like timecode 0:00:00:00. After playing around a bit you should be able to import the tab separated text file to end up with one clip per row in CatDV, but without the thumbnail attached. Next, import all the JPEG files, into a separate window if that makes it easier. You should have the same number of clips in each window, one with metadata and no media, the other with media and no metadata. Sort both windows so they’re in the same order (eg. based on image file name), then select all the clips with no thumbnail and do Edit > Copy. Then select all the clips with thumbnails and do Edit > Paste Metadata.

There isn’t no. If CatDV encounters a 29.97 fps movie it will assume drop frame timecode so the wall clock duration of the movie is displayed correctly. If you want to change it to non drop you’d have to do so via the Tools > Change Time Base command.

I’m not sure why that would occur. Are you using replication? In any case, the 3.22 schema is quite trivial, it just adds an extra constraint for debugging, so is far from essential.

Currently analaysis of files during import is done within the CatDV process. If a particular QuickTime codec crashes when processing a file then CatDV will crash (though it does autosave the catalog at periodic intervals, and the log file will show which file it was working on). We do have using a separate process to handle the import down as a possible enhancement but as this is quite a rare occurrence in normal operation it’s not a top priority.

If you do experience problems on import some things to try include:

– turn off the Details panel during import
– switch to a Concise view during import
– turn off “Generate full size thumbnails from file system” prefs option (Mac OS X only)
– import files in smaller batches and try to determine if a particular file is failing repeatably

It’s not a IP address it’s the IP address. The server will only have one or maybe two and you have to enter the right one. Can I just check, are you setting up the server on your office network? If so, see your IT department for details on how to set this up. Or are you maybe trying it out on a laptop whose IP address keeps changing depending on which WiFi network you’re on? That’s fine for testing but obviously not the normal way of deploying it. For that, leave the IP address blank and press Cancel when it prompts you to fill it in.

I suspect the problem is a misconfiguration of the server’s IP address in the Server Config page. When clients connect to the server they’re actually connecting to a naming service which returns the address of the actual server object to use. If the server has multiple IP addresses it needs to know which one the clients are using to connect to it. You therefore have to configure it with its own IP address in the server control panel.

You say when you drag a clip onto the grouping value “nothing comes in to CatDV”. Can I stop you right there – can I clarify whether you’re trying to drag a file onto the grouping value or a clip that you’ve already imported into the catalog? By clip I mean something that has already been imported into the catalog – you need to import the file first.

To see the New Empty Subclip command you need to enabled advanced menus via CatDV’s Preferences.

Hi Craig,
Did you get the email I sent you a few days ago after looking at your log file? The two crash logs you sent seemed to indicate either a corrupt MPEG file (in which case it would probably crash QuickTime consistently each time you process the file) or a problem extracting large thumbnails from the file system (which you can turn off via a Preferences option).
