Hi Neil, I’ve looked on Youtube to try to find something to illustrate what I mean. There is similar stuff on there but they use a frame grab which is cropped with a garbage matte, which is fine where the camera is static but not on pans. The way I suggested is sort of like cloning in Photoshop but doing it with video in a different way by having the same clip layered over clip A. Move clip B under the playhead until you get a clear frame of the object which is blocked in clip A, say for instance the tree trunk which you will be introducing the offending triangle to as you pan. If you position clip B so that when both clips are playing, clip B is showing a clean tree trunk, crop it roughly then position it so that it is in the correct place over clip A. When everything is lined up correctly you can refine the crop and render. When playing out things should look pretty good as the cropped clip B will pan just like clip A but several frames apart.
Here’s a YouTube video showing something similar but in this case he is using a freeze frame rather than video, but the idea is the same. Like I said, this is very difficult for me to explain but it does work.

Not sure how to explain this but I have done something similar years ago so here goes. If you are panning in the affected shots you may be in luck. Say for instance that several frames along your triangle was over the tree trunk you already have an unobstructed shot of the tree trunk a few frames back. Now if you layer the same clip over the top, but go back to where the tree is good then crop out the unwanted parts on the top clip leaving you with a “good’ tree. Manually position the top clip in image and wireframe mode so that it covers the bad stuff Done correctly it can be made to look very good as it is the same scene but just running a few frames back where the shot is clean.
I’m sure that’s as clear as mud but that’s the best I can do. Years ago there was a plug-in specifically for object removal. I watched a demo of it and figured out how it worked. I can’t remember what the plug-in was called but in the event didn’t need to buy it because I could sample previous “good” frames too without it. Anyway, I hope this gives some food for thought

April 9, 2014 at 7:34 pm in reply to: Fixing stupid mistake – Applying notes/clip names to clips already in timelineAs this is the FCP forum and not the FCPX forum I assume you are working with FCP7. In the browser right click on the interview clip and go to label, choose a color, purple is hinted for interviews. Once you choose a color all the segments of that master clip will have that color in the timeline regardless of placement. Choose different colors for the other master clips, it’s then easy to see which is which in the timeline.

Correction, partition 1 has FCS3 FCP7.0.3 running under Lion.

I agree with many of the comments here, I would never compromise a working system by updating the O.S. I have several boot options. Disk one has FCS2 running Snow Leopard, I keep it because I find it much more stable than FCS3 (FCP7). Disk 2 is partitioned into two. Partition 1 has FCS2 running Lion. Partition 2 has FCPX 10.0.9 running under Mountain Lion, I haven’t gone the FCPX 10.1 route because of Mavericks.
When installing multiple boot disks it’s easy to bring over your documents and files of your choice from another disk using Migration assistant.
One important thing to do when running multiple boot drives is to manage indexing because being boot drives they are journaled and so with 3 boot disks and booted into Disk A, it will constantly indexing Disks B & C. To prevent this activity which will slow everything down go to system preferences, Spotlight>Privacy and drag in Disks B and C. Repeat this for all Boot disks, for example if Booted into Disk C put Disks A and D into the Spotlight privacy panel, etc.
This setup works great for me. I still have my old trusted and optimized systems yet have the flexibility to use the newer ones without compromising older Apps. Yeah, some people have managed to get FCP7 running on Mavericks but it’s a bit of a dog so what’s the point. -
Hello Michael, on the link I posted you will see on the right hand side icons for the various applications which contain video tutorials, click on the Compressor 4 icon. Personally I export from FCP a self contained QT without conversion and then do all my compression – conversion within Compressor. The tutorial for Compressor 4 is good, all the numbers for Compressor 3 are exactly the same so try that. Large areas of graduated tone are always difficult particularly with crossfades so if you don’t get what you want from Compressor then Sorenson Squeeze would be a good choice as it allows a greater level of tweaking. Take a look at the tutorial on the Vimeo link.

March 13, 2014 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Very dark video in the viewer and canvas windows.Shane, you are absolutely right, leave things well alone. When Apple release a new O.S. more often than not it takes away more functionality in older apps than it gives. These boards are littered with similar complaints and many a time I’ve wanted to say, WHY?
Jim, why not ask your IT guys to take your edit stations off any external network but keep them on your LAN for internal file transfers. It’s not generally a good idea anyway with an edit station as left to it’s own devices whilst having a live internet connection it’s constantly polling remote servers, also Apple and other software vendors interrogating your system in the background. All of which is a drain on your already maxed out processing power.

According to the specs, Thunderbolt “video” expansion. However, as someone else has posted identical problems so it looks like it might be a Mavericks problem. Seems to be a real “dogs breakfast” of an O/S even if you are running, or trying to run, all new everything.

FCP7 is intel only so can’t be installed on a G5. Unfortunately a Macbook Air really isn’t up to the job. You need to have your media on a separate HD for editing. If I’m correct the Air has only USB2 expansion and USB2 drives are no good for video editing. When you launch FCP for the first time it profiles your system for real time playback, if your system isn’t up to the job then your RT options will be limited in the way that you describe. That being said, it doesn’t mean that your final output will be of low quality, only the display during the edit, but there is still the external storage problem. A Macbook pro with external Firewire or Thunderbolt storage would be a better choice.
