H264 is generally used as a delivery format and because of it’s complex frame structure Fcp7 won’t work with it very well which is why everyone converts it to ProRes prior to editing.
Filmic Pro is an app that you use on your phone. It gives you full manual control, just like a regular video camera. There are tons of reviews on google or YouTube. It’s not free but worth buying.

The iPhone shoots remarkably good video but unfortunately at a variable frame rate which changes on the fly depending on lighting conditions. In my experience it all looks good on the phone but when you transfer it to a computer things start to fall apart. If you want to shoot video with the iPhone for anything other than fun then I suggest you get ‘
‘Filmic Pro’ which gives you full control of frame rates and everything else.

Unfortunately this is the way things go. If you have different tools on the same computer sooner or later something is going to get updated and as a result spoil the game for the other apps. Personally I never update anything on a working system.

Most of us who make a living in post production have more than one computer in the office. For instance, I have a Mac pro running FCP7 with the appropriate OS and BM driver. Also a Mac Pro running FCPX with the appropriate OS and BM driver. The BM drivers are very specific and the read me files list what is supported and what isn’t. You have to trawl though all the read me’s until you find the one that suits your needs/setup.

Your shutter speed needs to be at least X2 your frame rate. 25fps – 1/50th or more. This will impact the exposure but the footage should be smooth.

Well, if it were me I would stick with what you have. If you wish to continue working with FCP7 your older setup will work best.

I hope I’ll be excused for coming in here sideways. I agree with Shane to a large degree about the viability of 4k for the consumer market. Yes you can buy a 4k capable TV but the TV networks can’t transmit it OTA and if they manage to do that in the future it will only by compressing the hell out of it so what’s the point.
However, I used to think, what’s the point of 4k? Well, someone recently pointed out that 4k is a fantastic opportunity for post production. There’s enough pixel density in there to enable us to completely re-frame the shots, something which has never been possible before. We can zoom in 100% and still have a 1080 pixel count, which more than likely is going to be the output format of the finished movie anyway. The creative possibilities of 4k are revolutionary but for the consumer, the man on the sofa, yeah I agree, it’s just a marketing ploy.

You missed my response and for some reason yours didn’t show up either. However, I you have multiple tracks they will mix down to 2 unless you tell FCP otherwise.
Firstly, go to sequence settings, choose the audio output tab then change the default 2 outputs to 4-6-8 or as many as you need.

You are not finished yet, it will still output 2 tracks..

In your timeline go to the left and then right click between the toggle and padlock icons to assign the tracks.
in your case 4 dual mono. So, track 1 assign to tracks 1&2. Track 2 assign to tracks 1&2, Track 3 Assign to tracks 3&4. Track 4 assign to tracks 3&4.

If you don’t do that all your tracks are assigned to tracks 1&2.

Hi Hope, Shane made a very good point but do you get the same RT when set up for a standard project setting. If so I would trash your FCP preferences. FCP would then re-invent itself and decide on your RT options. Given your O/S, you do have Quicktime 7 installed?

The first time you launch FCP it interrogates your system and decides which RT options you will have based on your hardware. Having said that, I would have thought you would have more options with your computer. FCP7 has all kinds of wierdness when run on later operating systems than itself. Some people manage to run it but the forums are littered with similar complaints.
