I guess you are going to have to do this manually if each layer is to reveal it’s particular shape (by it’s own characteristics), at it’s own time – it’s pretty precise (for example T by the expanding from the conjunction of paths, then the E, then The M). if you just need a random expansion you could use something else based on the alpha of the overall word together i.e an effect. but it’s not the same thing. if you discover some breakthrough technique , please share 🙂

believe it or not but I have never actually used it 🙂
here’s a breakdown:

in the reference the per character reveal is selective and precise. to achieve this kind of control I would separate the letters to layers (this script is handy: https://aescripts.com/decomposetext/), stroke each by manually creating a mask path at the center of each and use the stroke effect, then through cascade parenting setting the tracking is easy. if you need to center the tracking I would use a null. like this:

September 28, 2016 at 8:25 am in reply to: audio files are trimmed down in my Ae Comp. mismatched frame rate?[Dave LaRonde] “What happens if you just move the out point in the 25 fps comp?”
nothing really.. it’s just get’s trimmed further away.. just appearance that’s all.
[Dave LaRonde] “I fix audio issues in other applications. I have been doing it that way since 1998.”
I use audio in Ae but it’s for reference most of the time. when I am done with my graphics or vfx, in the end an editor and others make the finishing touches. guess this one will remain another one of Ae’s audio oddities.Thank you for your time.

September 28, 2016 at 12:03 am in reply to: audio files are trimmed down in my Ae Comp. mismatched frame rate?I tried it. still got trimming at 25fps and the audio extends a subframe

in 23.976 or 29.97 they are trimmed all the way as normal.

this happens in other versions CC2014, CS6. I believe this is a big lack of understanding on my part as to how audio works… if someone could explain it to me simple because as it seems, in some case audio comes with some kind of inherited frame rate?
maybe this is related: in the project panel it says it’s 07:15 and it is so when I use it in 23.976 or 29.97. when I drag it to 25fps comp it’s now 07:12

[Cole Christine] “I’m not familiar with the downsides of exporting H.264 via AE as opposed to AME – any insight for me on this one?”
Yes. read here:
https://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/adobe-media-encoder-h-264-mpeg-2-wmv-after-effects/?segment=dvawatch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWzRgxRqUUsto address what others have suggested
[Tero Ahlfors] “Recompressing compressed footage will look bad. But if you use Quicktime’s H264 it will look superbad. Don’t use it.
“
very true. you are compressing an already compressed footage. every time you compress you lose quality. also Quicktime H264 is and old buggy compressor that still exists in Ae but you should not use it. you files will be much bigger then regular H.264 compression and the quality will be poor. see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUpaoVkMZZc&t=0s[Dave LaRonde] “I’d like to know HOW you’re rendering H.264 in AE. It hasn’t been available for a couple of versions!
“this is how:

exporting H.264 trough Ae is a big NO NO. you should use AME for your encoded exports.

September 27, 2016 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Ghost look with energy, rippling, glowing edges?[Stephen Pickering] “Is there any chance you would be willing to upload your project file for me to see how you’re doing each of the layers?”
I got into the habit of saving certain project from forums but this one was pretty quick so I didn’t. I could try this later and show a breakdown send it if I have the time but have to go… I did use shine and mir. this could be done in many ways. many good help is in this forum just wait a while and another will pitch in 🙂
[Stephen Pickering] “or are you just using the term generally”
a general use of the term. meaning I just apply and effect on a duplicate of the footage and colorize it.

September 27, 2016 at 9:40 am in reply to: Ghost look with energy, rippling, glowing edges?[Stephen Pickering] “Can anyone give me some ideas on how to make the “energy” around the actress more liquid like and flowing (up)? I would really like to have it flowing behind her hair so that we can see her hair.
“You should be thinking in Layers and not try to get all in one effect. it’s easier to understand an effect if you break it down to different parts. you already have a keyed footage, you can use a duplicate of that as a matte for any other effect or look, one time or many times.
there are many effects that allow this rippling type edge. one effect that comes to mind is turbulent noise. just animate the evolution and you got a rippling edge. for the smoky feel you can try to construct it yourself with something like Turbulent Noise or Fractal Noise or Displacement Map or use a stock footage of smoke. you can try to get fancier with something like Trapcode Mir: https://www.redgiant.com/products/trapcode-mir/ or Trapcode Shine.
here’s a little something I assembled in a few minutes with combination of many of the effects and technique that I suggested:
