Sure glad to help Buddy. yes, the 3d will only allow true perspective so if you want a real corner pin, then cropping the precomp is the way to go. Quick tip: you can use region of interest to crop you precomp

if their opacity is 0 at those overlapped areas, it would not make a difference in render times (or at least it’s not supposed to) . as for trimming you can hold the shift key and manually drag the edges and they will snap. for automatic trimming try this: https://aescripts.com/obsessive-layers/

[William Yao] ” Which part did i miss?”
Text layers are Ae’s vector based layers and they are basically an element inside a blank layer the size of the composition… so effects work on the layer and this is why you see it at it’s dimensions. you can approach this in 2 ways or more:
1. precomp the text layer and in the precomp you should crop it to the text’s boundaries
2. use the 3d switch and use the natural perspective of 3d layers with rotating it in 3d space.Roei Tzoref

December 15, 2016 at 9:11 pm in reply to: Is it possible to make a starburst effect in a circle and not a rectangle? Masking isn’t workingI see now. this effect feeds of the pixels and masking is just giving it less pixels and not cropping it. you can create your mask on a solid in a layer on top of the layer with the CC starburst effects and set the latter to user the above layer as an alpha matte. think of it as a clipping mask

more about track mattes here:

[Baard Kolstad] “Is there any way to key a gradient in after effects, so that it goes from 0% on one color to 100% on another color from an imported PNG? So in the middle of the shape it would be 50% opacity. “
you can create a luma matte out of this layer. apply the black and white effect and adjust the parameters until you get this:

now the original image can use this layer as a luma matte. the white will be opaque, the black will be transparent

nothing I can see here to imply some layers won’t be affected. unless you changed the material options of each layer to not accept light. you can reduce your project to the offending composition and send the project file here so we can examine it. there could be number of things that making this not work.
