Trying to speed up render times. If I have a bunch of layers that don’t need to overlap and go up in a staircase, is there a quick way select them and trim each so that it ends just as the next step begins? I thought that there would at least be a 3rd party script, but I don’t see one.

if their opacity is 0 at those overlapped areas, it would not make a difference in render times (or at least it’s not supposed to) . as for trimming you can hold the shift key and manually drag the edges and they will snap. for automatic trimming try this: https://aescripts.com/obsessive-layers/

Do a search on “trim” in aescripts.com. I think there are a few different solutions, depending on what you want to do.
