we answered our own question. we had reset a setting in quicktime pro to the safe setting….warning. don’t EVER do this. does NOT work with decklink.

i would make a layer of shapes in illustrator to look like one branch of a snowflake. copy and rotate that layer of shape 6 times. you get some really cool snowflakes.
