[Tom Sefton] “No – shot in LOG”

I don’t think that’s what he meant. With FS7 footage FCP will *automatically* apply a default Sony CAMERA LUT upon import, which would make the one LUT you’re applying a SECONDARY LUT, therefore it would obviously look different than elsewhere.

    [Joe Marler] “To expedite this…”

Exactly what I was about to suggest, too. Had no idea that that was in the manual. Good to know. ????

Alternatively you can also make a selection of the first minute or so of each clip, make a multicam just from THEM, then simply extend them to full length in the Angle Viewer once the MC is created.

July 24, 2019 at 3:42 pm in reply to: fcp 6 files editable with fcp pro x?

[Oliver Peters] “The short answer is no. “

Huh? No? Um… there’s extremely little difference between 6 and 7’s XML. Only colored markers I think. So FCP6 XML is in fact absolutely fine for using SendToX to, well, send to X.

So I guess the long answer is yes. ????

July 19, 2019 at 11:35 am in reply to: How to insert graphics and logos into a crawl?

It’s actually really simple. Well, in principal. All you have to do is put your text and your graphics layers (or drop zones) into a group, place and organize as needed and apply the “Scroll Text” behavior to it. Done.

Unfortunately though, Motion can get bogged down VERY quickly with long text passages (even still one of Motion’s biggest Achilles heels) and makes it a real pain to edit. And while you can of course publish it to FCP and it sounds very simple, you’re much better off doing everything in Motion when needed, since it can quickly become surprisingly complex and laborious, depending on what you need. And I think it would be extremely hard if not impossible to actually publish enough parameters to make editing it in FCP useable or even feasible.

May 17, 2019 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Market Demand for Motion Templates

[Lorenzo M. Vidali] “I know the market isn’t as big as After Effects, but there also isn’t as much out there for Motion either.”

Ironically, I’d say the exact opposite. For one, Motion templates are fully usable and customizable both with, but just as much without Motion. Namely in Final Cut Pro X. Since near 100% of every title, effect, transition and generator in FCP is in fact a Motion project, yes. A level of usability and flexibility AE templates can’t boast. And with that there is, again imho, far MORE out there for Motion that is usable and of any interest to a much wider audience than for AE, especially since the potential audience is exponentially larger than that of AE/PPro. AE’s strength is specialty plugins, not so much templates and making effects and transitions is even an option to begin with.

Not much out there? You’re familiar with motionVFX.com? FCPXfree.com? FXFactory.com?

Whether there is any demand for your templates and plugins of course hinges solely on their quality and usability. But either way, with AE templates your only real target is AE users, with Motion templates, FX, transitions etc., things that aren’t even possible with AE, your primary target is FCP users, but also, to a much smaller degree, Motion users.

  • [Bret Williams] “If you want to watch in slow mo in browser, you can play it back slow with the JKL keys.”
I was actually going to suggest that, too. But that’s slower than half, so I didn’t for the sake of German precision. ????

But I’m fascinated that Favorites change with speed. ????????????‍♂️

  • [Rikki Blow] “I’m a bit confused by what I’m supposed to be able to do by using ‘Open Clip’.”

    You RETIME the clip there?

[Rikki Blow] “and pull up ‘General’ rather than ‘Basic’ parameters”

    ???? ???
Could it be you’re talking about the INFORMATION Inspector, not the VIDEO Inspector? There are no ‘General’ and/or ‘Basic’ parameters. Just ‘General’ and/or ‘Basic’ metadata.

[Rikki Blow] “So not sure what you mean by “Open Clip” and change it there. “

    … and retime.

March 12, 2019 at 7:56 am in reply to: Final Cut L3 – multiple texts in one title

Yep. I’d say Bret describes the only real possibility perfectly. Only other real option I can think of is you make multiple titles from the one and simply stack them as needed. But while that works, I’d say it’s much messier than what Bret describes past the third or so text element.

But as a single title? Nope. Not at the moment. ????

  • [Michael Hancock] “Totally forgot about Open Clip. Nice. Does this break relinking to the original clip though? Do you know if it causes any issues with XMLs to Resolve or another program?”

I highly doubt it would translate to elsewhere, since the original media is of course not altered. But then I can’t say for sure that that’s not in fact included in the XML. ????????‍♂️

[Michael Hancock] “In Premiere you can change the playback rate in the browser. But it’s not recommended because of relinking issues (unless that’s changed – I inherited a project where it required a ton of manual relinking and overcutting). I believe in Avid you can also change the playback rate of the source clip, and this doesn’t break relinking. So it can be done in other NLEs since it’s just the software using clip metadata to affect the playback rate. Resolve can change the playback rate too, but again – not sure about relinking since I haven’t tested it.”

Well, technically, that’s in fact exactly what you’re doing via the “Open clip” approach, too. I don’t see the difference, aside from maybe accessibility. And again, that’s also something you can change on a clip level with e.g. KYNO. Ironically something I do all the time the other way around, since I personally HATE it when clips come in with the same timebase as framerate. Something a few cameras will do by default.

I’d actually like to see any if not all of a clip’s VIDEO parameters be accessible in the event, too, yes. Not just audio. So you can do stuff like scaling, stabilization, applying effects etc. etc. in the event as well, instead of doing the “Open clip” spiel there, too. At least you batch apply LUTs if needed, so there’s that.

  • [Michael Hancock] “Unfortunately, no.”

Sure there is. “Open Clip” and change it there. If that’s in fact worth the effort…

That’s not a shortcoming of FCP (especially since every other NLE will do the same), it’s how THE CAMERA is recording. FCP is doing everything by the book. The camera is recording with a 25fps TIMEBASE, which is something else than FRAMERATE. If you were to change the timebase to 50, e.g. with a tool like KYNO, then it would play at half speed all the time. But then you’d obviously lose the “Automatic speed” option and be stuck with the exact opposite problem.
