Convert it to 29.97 with Compressor. 60p to 30p converts nicely.

SD footage always looks like crap when viewing a Quicktime on a computer screen. This is because computer screens have square pixels and SD video footage uses non-square pixels.

If you don’t have an AJA Kona card or breakout box
And if you’re stuck recording HDV when you’re not doing the live key
Then capture your HDV material following that tutorial I linked you to.

I thought you wanted to convert your HDV footage to ProRes for the purpose of keying. I don’t know if Quicktime converts HDV to ProRes during ingest…

P2 cards are for Panasonic cameras. You’re using Sony. So buying a P2 card isn’t going to help unless you also buy a Panasonic camera that records DVCPro HD or AVC-Intra (NOT AVCHD).
I agree with Tom about getting a Kona card. The Kona LHi is probably all you need. But if you’re looking for a cost effective solution now, here’s a tutorial for capturing HDV to ProRes via FW:

You should be able to convert to ProRes during ingest via firewire. Although, if you shot HDV at 1080, you’re stuck with the 1440X1080 resolution. Not sure if that causes issues with keying though. I believe HDV 720p is still 1280X720 though, which is good.

Last time I used iMovie, which was a while ago, it was capture video as .dv files.
This is not good for FCP. One reason is .dv combines audio and video, whereas FCP allows you do keep them separate, enabling more flexibility.
I’m not sure how iMovie captures HD though. Even if the HD files are compatible with FCP, I highly doubt iMovie supports good editing codecs like ProRes or DVCPro HD

Hey Jen,
Be sure you are working in RGB and not CMYK. It will say along the top of the window which mode you are in. Be sure it’s RGB for both Illustrator and Photoshop.
The alpha channel is added in Photoshop. I saw a tutorial on here by Rich Harrington way back, which is how I learned the trick. I’ll see if I can find it.
