If you are talking about XAVC-I and not the long GOP version then they are the same as the XAVC from the F5 so they should AMA with whatever plugin works for the F5. Do not Auto, select the plugin.

Having said that, I own an FS7 and I start in Resolve then use the roundtrip setting to send media and an AAF to MC. Other than a bit of extra time, I am not sure why more folks aren’t doing this. It saves a lot of trouble and with the clone tool one can backup the media. Also, don’t forget the “Use reel names setting” in Resolve. Michael can tell you what is best there better than I.

    Good Fortune,
    Robert

    Yep,

Putting in black between the clips and dipping is what I did and have done before but that should not be necessary.

[Shane Ross] “Cross Fade is what you do to audio…that’s not picture.”

Maybe so but that is just semantics.

Good point on the dissolve. I appreciate the correction.

BTW, I did an homage to you in another thread somewhere. Did my first Stock Answer. Somebody asked about transcoding for Avid and I said start in Resolve.

    Hope y’all well and good,
    Robert

January 7, 2015 at 7:42 pm in reply to: Any comments on MC 7?

[Christian Kennel] “All in all we share some of the frustrations as others but the lack of speed and snappiness is one of the major issues our editors constantly voice. It takes forever to start up, launch a project, and the system often hangs in the middle of tasks. We have worked with Avid to resolve the issues for years now and even with their help we have never been able to get back to the V5.5 snappiness. Very frustrating for all.”

For MANY folks 8.3 cured the hangs, etc. One needs to make sure they try different versions of hardware drivers. For example the latest Blackmagic Desktop Video 10.3.4 seems to work well with 8.3 . Also, if on a Mac you may want to stay away from Yosemite.

I would doubt Avid is going to spend much time on fixing 7.x.

    Hope you get a fix,
    Robert

There is no crossfade or crossdissolve

If I center the fade on the cut is there a way to make it fade out and in?

    Thanks,
    Robert

[Shane Ross] “It’s the “/” key…that’s the ADD TRANSITION. This works for both audio and video, so make sure to set your target tracks first. Well, most versions allow you to set the target tracks in the add dissolve interface as well.”

I know about the \ to add a transition. There is no crossfade or crossdissolve so I will have to cheat that. If you \ to add a fade to color then \ to add a fade from color, the second one overwrites the first so you have to put two edits close to each other.

And SERIOUSLY, no video keyframing? We could do that in FCP from at least version 3. Used it often.

As a younger person might say, LAME! Come on AVID, it’s dang near 2015!

If in all the AVID and BCC stuff I have there was a decent crossfade then I would not need the video keyframing.

    This is unnecessarily frustrating.

    Thanks Shane,
    Robert

  • RAO’s stock answer number one:

    Start in Resolve

As mentioned above you can start in another package, transcode and include an AAF or EDL or XML, and send that to Avid. Once the edit is done you export an AAF, EDL, or similar and send that to the package you started in. You can then reconnect to the camera originals.

Many folks, including notalentwannabes like myself use this workflow. I start in Resolve and finish usually in Resolve. If you want to output 4K you will need the licensed version. The Lite version I believe works now up to and including UHD. By the way, when folks say Conform, think reconnect to camera originals.

Resolve and packages designed for Dailes can make multiple copies of your camera originals and you can do a quick color correction pass referred to as a one-light.

    Hope that helps,
    Robert

[Bill Ravens] “Alternatively, create a new node and go to the SIZING pane. Make a preset that scales the view to HD. The external viewer will now fill the screen properly. The internal view window will not fill the monitor window, but, you can zoom into the image with a thumbwheel. Just be sure to tick “Force to source resolution” before you render.”

Thanks for the replies Gents. I was hoping not to have to do something that would potentially muck up my output. I suppose I could do some trial runs to get in the habit of Force…

    Hope y’all have some fun,
    Robert

  • I have been playing with workflows lately and if I was you I would test a workflow that starts in Resolve. In version 11.x you can use the copy tool to make backups of the original camera media and then make an assemblage of the clips and output that to Avid via an AAF. Many folks are using this workflow. If you want to output 4K (not UHD) you will need the Resolve Software paid version. Otherwise the free Lite version will work.

Be aware that to get smooth 4K playback in Resolve you will need a beefy machine or turn down the debayer settings.

    Good fortune on your project,
    Robert

  • Nope…sorry. Once you have an external video IO device attached and active, audio and video go only to it. NO way around that. You have to monitor audio from the TV. You can send it to the mixer, if your TV or monitor has a headphone jack. Yeah, I want this to be different too…

It’s really sad to see Shane loosing it in his old age;-)

You can get an HDMI De-embedder which will split out the audio. I have this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/Kanex-Pro-De-Embedder-2-Channel-HAECOAX/dp/B009KAU0WO/ref=sr_1_3?s=audio-video-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1419387229&sr=1-3&keywords=kanex+pro

It outputs both analog and digital audio. I send the optical to my Apollo Twin and it works well. Lip sync is pretty close, you may have to adjust it in some software packages.

Also, the new MC 8.3 supposedly works with the latest Desktop Video properly. Avid and BMD have been working on the playback/trim issues.

BTW, 8.3 seems ok in my so far limited testing. I was able to playback 4k (not UHD) Sony RAW on my laptop by turning down the res. I converted it to the 4K DNX and it played without stuttering at full res.

    Y’all have some Holiday Goodness,
    Robert

  • [Dwaine Maggart] “Sadly Robert, that’s not true. You can buy Retina MBP with only Intel HD graphics. Both 13″ and 15″ models.”

Thanks for the correction. I could have almost bet that they all have AMD or Nividea add on GPUs.

Sad indeed! Apple should do better.
