Really you should use the SDI input but if you don’t have any way to do that Component is ok, sort of. Like what JPo said this is hardly scientific by today’s (or the 90’s even) standards. Setting the PLUGE gets you somewhat close in 601 but noting critical. I actually have one of those Ike monitors and it is not even a Grade-1 CRT it is more of a CRT to go with an Avid or similar. It was not a bad mid grade CRT fifteen years ago but not so great today.

Yeah that is part of using the color bars to set it up by eye the “old fashioned” way. Basically the Test pattern has colors and patches of black and white so you can set color balance and contrast.

Probably the best thing you can do is to send a set of color bars to the monitor through the computer and adjust the monitor controls so that the color bars are right. Unless you have a probe and software to calibrate it (to REC 601) that is about all you can do.
Just be aware that if you are trying to grade a HD (REC709) show the monitor will be in a different color space.

That is a Standard Def SDI CRT are you going to feed it SD SDI and down convert?

I would second the Dream-Color and a HD-Link Display port as a bare bones least expensive “real” calibrated display. You can use the HP software an probe to get it close in 709 and then think about the new Light-Space for calibration only or Cal-Man “DI” or “Post” and a newer X-Rite probe as a next step.

Interesting how close the GTX-480 is to the 580 and I think you can pick them up on ebay for about $150 – $200 these days.

I bought a 17″ MBP 8,3 in December and I just took the 750G Snow Leopard drive out of my old 15″ MBP and put it into my new 17″ because I did not want to run Lion on the machine. That worked fine, if you have a Mac-Pro or an older Intel mac you could get an external drive caddy and build a Snow Leopard drive with the older machine and then just install it into the new 8,2 computer.

I kind of assumed this was a question for someone who works as a DIT and has a Resolve machine on set. I would weld a lock box to the DIT cart with a USB hub in it.

So far I generally like Cine Fluorescents more than LED fixtures, unless you get a very expensive LED fixture the output will be spikey and off color. Art Adams recently did a very good review with pictures of the various LED fixtures available for Film and Video ( https://tinyurl.com/d395ufb ) I liked the look of the Mole Richardson best but it’s $4K or more.
