November 6, 2012 at 12:52 pm in reply to: How do I speed up FCP 7?

Thank you very much neil, your post has promtped me to invest in a very decent fast external harddrive for my media.

Ive heard the word ‘raid’ banded about, is there entry level articles on the brand/company/hardware? Ive tried to wikipedia it but have to admit, finding it quite hard to swallow.

Now looking at render issues, am I right in believing that the render files are stored on a harddrive and that FCP only allows a certain amount before it gets full and slows down rendering to the point when it will not allow rendering (dreaded orange bar)?

    David and Al, thank you.

I think I will enter some smaller online festivals before I try for theatrical releases and by that time, I may be able to upgrade to a c100 or c300.

Do you know of any good articles or forum related pages regarding 4:2:2 because much like my previous question, its a subject I have heard about briefly, but could not hold a conversation about.

For myself I am at a bit of a crossroads, because I now feel I have mastered the 5d mii and also eager to learn. Image quality is paramount to most videographers and improving my image quality inch by inch is my next step. After that it is down to my style and knowledge of film.

Have either of you ever had any troubles with magic lantern? and do you know of a website or article which talks about its features? Because whilst I enjoy making films, I do rely on my camera for part of my income.

    Thanks again.

still a newby. appreciating everyones help, hopefully i will be able to do the same 1 day.

    Hi Bradley

    A million thank you’s

Just for anything who might be reading this post. The PNG format exported into FCP 7.0 with no problem. NOT containing any border. exactly what I wanted, this is something I will frequently use in future.

    Kind regards

Firstly I think your wedding video is excellent. Its got a really good feeling, plus some really pretty looking images. I wouldnt believe you were doing that for your first time. Can I ask you where you learnt how to have the text track the people? i’ve looked online but without much luck. Also did you use either after effects or apple motion? thanks

well right now i am doing jobs for peanuts, gaining experience. I have the vortex dvd but was probably only looking at it from a production point of view being as this is the 1st thing i have to get right. Agreed, i am digging myself out alot, but I will take your advice on board and try and learn about POST as quick as I can. Thank you for suggesting a route.

    Thanks Jeff

The info was helpful. The FCP export settings and compression in general are still very daunting to me but its something I really want to learn how to tackle. I only got my mac 3 months ago, exploring my mac is good advice. It was a shock to hear that software with the computer would be able enough to complete these tasks. Pleasantly surprised.

Craig I appreciate your help, my skill set is unfortunately weighted more towards the production side of the process, sadly in post I still have a long way to go. Is there a good linear way to learn? my learning process seems to be running into problems and then looking for help (thank you both again)

I am happy to put the hours in, with tutorials and practice. If you can suggest where to start, my goal, to become a freelance videographer. predominantly using PMW EX1 and DSLR’s.

Thanks for the quick reply craig.

Could you go into a little bit more detail. When you say ‘compressor’ do you mean exporting, or is it separate program? and DVD presets? i am unfamiliar with those also.

I’ve found a link talking about compression in idvd, which is like a beginners compression as much as i can tell.

Right now i have each clip on my desktop as large Mov files. will i need to export those files again as something else (under the dvd presets you talked of)?

    appreciate the help

  • I bought it 2nd hand from a guy fairly local to me and he didnt have a copy unfortunately.

New copies online are going for about £75 or $110. I just wanted to see if anyone had a copy they didnt have use for, aka someone who has learned all the techniques on there and could pass it on to a fellow ex1 user for a lower cost.

The advice is appreciated either way.

    cheers

June 30, 2010 at 11:36 am in reply to: Memory card confusion for pmw ex1

This video tutorial is all set for anyone. If i managed to do it, anyone can. I am still such a beginner with my pmw ex1 but it was very very easy (whilst a little time consuming). But like craig said above you’ll be a fairly long time without a camera and you have to hand over a fair bit of cash, considerin you can get it for free.

How were the original cards you used. im still waiting on my cards to come through and i’ll hav a practice on them before I go out for a shoot but anything I should bare in mind other than the speed and not being able to slow mo my work.

    thanks

    Thanks again craig.

delving a little more into firmware I found a very helpful link which was from a ‘Vimeo’ account. A fairly straight forward step by step guide to link the firmware 1.2 that you recommended to my camera.

    https://vimeo.com/10106072

drags on a bit but its very detailed.

regarding the slow motion feature the camera has. I used it for the first time the other evening and found that when i played back the footage I filmed it didnt seem as if it had worked, or if it was working it had slow mo’d only the tiniest bit. Is this something that is used for editing purposes? eg. so when you slow mo it in editing suite it looks better quality. or hav i set it up wrong?

Final query is do u recommend i get vortexs ‘mastering the sony pmw ex1?’ As I have lots of questions regarding the camera but I dont want to waste ppls time. Does it cover alot of the field stuff i’m likely to encounter?

    Thanks again Craig
