January 13, 2006 at 5:39 am in reply to: 23.976 -> 29.97 10 Bit still doesn’t work with 5.2.4 / DVC ProHD audio problems.Luke, Thanks for the response. It must be nice living in Australia, here were lucky to get a day or two off – work, work, work. In any case I suspect there is a general incompatibility – audio wise – between your card and this deck. The Avid tech description matched what is happening. But the Kona 2 does work. I have found though the Kona 2 and AJA IO to be incompatible with a JVC digi-s deck I have. Maybe AES is a loose spec? In any case I saw this mentioned in your driver description and so I wasn’t sure if you guys were able to duplicate it or not. Possibly it is just a problem between the BM chips and this deck. I don’t think there is anything else to check on my end. My settings are correct on the deck and in FCP and it never works except for that one time when FCP was in the wrong mode – weird.
The 23.98 -> 29.97 problem is a definite bug though and does it everytime with 5.2 or later drivers and not earlier.

I would imagine it will be weeks at the most for the Kona2 and DL HD Pro to ship in PCI Express. To me I would definitely not worry about the Intel stuff and let that settle out but PCI Express is here and will be the bus for the next few years. Why buy PCI X now just to see the new cards introduced in the next month or so.
And for SCSI I agree it can be a pain to setup but once that’s done it’s done. And I get 420 MB/sec using only 8 drives and a SCSI card. Fiber is much more expensive but the performance has improved with 4gb hardware. I don’t see SCSI as a bad move.
Some people tell me they are getting over 400 MB/sec using SATA raids but I have yet to see it myself.

I’m using 8 10k Cheetah drives and it’s faster than an XSERVE RAID. I’ve done 1080 U/C 4:4:4 jobs with it no problem which at this point is about the highest quality you can do with a G5 and it worked fine. Also I would buy a quad G5 if I were you and get the new PCI Express bus so you don’t have to buy all of this stuff over again – SCSI Card, Capture Card- like many of us will have to.

I just talked to will at AJA and he was saying this has been an on-going discussion with Apple and at one time they said it was AJA’s problem. I know this is not the case as I have had the same problem with a Black Magic card. Anyway he wanted poeple who have had this problem to document it and what it meant to the work flow so it could be forwarded to Apple. His email is will@aja.com
Thanks

Does the same with a Black Magic card.

Yeah I know there is a work around on the ETT it just amazes me thqat version after version comes out and it’s still the same. The 720 problem has been discussed here before. If you capture 720 footage from HD-SDI the clip comes in black and as a subclip. You can remove subclip limitations and see the video but the clip will be twice as long as captured with one half of it black. You can re-import the clip and it is OK, but it’s pretty that this is evidently a low priority bug for Apple.

I had an extra SATA drive around and I re-installed Tiger – fresh format – and the whole deal, FCP 5 et. all, and it still did it. There is no problem with FCP 4.5. I’ll be using this setup at the World Series next week. Any comments about stability? 4.5 or 5.0? I’ll bring hard drives of both if one has a problem.
Thanks
Robert

Another thing that happens is that the timecode is inaccurate. I was setting my in on my tape at 1:00:00:00 and the clip had first frame at 59:56:16 or something like that and it wouldn’t do the same thing twice – no handles set. This almost looks like a drop-frame, non-drop issue but I couldn’t find anything wrong there. And yes this is 720P DVC ProHD and I’ve seen it using uncompressed 720 as well. How does one make Apple aware of something like this?

October 14, 2005 at 9:20 pm in reply to: subclips automatically created afted digitizingI’ve had this on 2 totally different systems. One with a BM HD Pro and one with a Kona 2. I capture in the clip normally and the clip has the sub-clip icon and when I play it it is black. If I remove sub-clip limitations it plays but it at the half way point through the clip it goes to black.
