I have 2 FCP systems. One on a dual 2.5 with a BM HD Pro card and a dual 2 with a Kona 2. On both systems when I capture the clips come in as sub clips and will show up BLACK and are not right unless I re-import them. This is with FCP 5.02 QT 7.03 and the latest of everything. The only thing in common with the 2 systems is that I upgraded both from FCP 4.5. Other than that pretty much stock g5s without a lot of extras.

This sounds like a software install problem… I sure don’t see anything of the sort here with a similar system… If you aren’t running Tiger, I’d suggest you get there…. but with a totally clean install…. no upgrade, start from scratch on a new partition or drive is easiest, otherwise you need to backup your files on that current startup disk before you perform an erase and install of Tiger on it. Update Tiger, then install FCP, then update it… add to the mix the latest drivers for your capture cards…

Are you capturing 720p 8 or 10bit via HD-SDI? If so, this is a serious bug in FCP that has yet to be addressed by Apple. Not sure if QT 7.0.3 fixed it or not.

This bug ONLY affects 720p 8/10bit captures and the only workaround I have found is what you’re doing, simply import the clips off the harddrives.

Another thing that happens is that the timecode is inaccurate. I was setting my in on my tape at 1:00:00:00 and the clip had first frame at 59:56:16 or something like that and it wouldn’t do the same thing twice – no handles set. This almost looks like a drop-frame, non-drop issue but I couldn’t find anything wrong there. And yes this is 720P DVC ProHD and I’ve seen it using uncompressed 720 as well. How does one make Apple aware of something like this?

They’ve been aware of it for several months now. You can do what I do, send them “Feedback” via their support page several times a week. It’s the most stupid thing I’ve ever seen in the application and one that I cannot believe Apple has let go for this long. Completely unprofessional to let such a glaring problem go uncorrected.

Tell all your friends to send Feedback as well. The more the merrier. 🙂

If you’re just capturing using the DVCPro HD codec, then come in via Firewire. That’s what I do. The quality is identical to coming in via SDI.

I had an extra SATA drive around and I re-installed Tiger – fresh format – and the whole deal, FCP 5 et. all, and it still did it. There is no problem with FCP 4.5. I’ll be using this setup at the World Series next week. Any comments about stability? 4.5 or 5.0? I’ll bring hard drives of both if one has a problem.

    Thanks

Yeah, it’s a Quicktime deal and Apple has to fix it. I’ve got two systems here, I’ve used a client’s system and they all do the bug with 720p material. The only thing that’s fail safe is using Firewire for DVCPro HD. Again, completely stupid of Apple to create a situation like this.

FCP 4.5 will be just fine, though I found the most stable combination to be with OS 10.3.8 and QT 6.5.2.
