Mts is a panasonic codec, canon uses qt in h264. May not help much but if the raw footage is pixelated I don’t know what you can do about it.

I think a lot of people who dread windoze will be pleasantly surprised. Win7’s not bad at all. I have no idea what the next thing is they’re about to roll out but I totally skipped Vista so I don’t really care. I still prefer OSX for editing, many because I like quick look so much but there are ways to get something like that going in Win7.

  • I think Apple is making it quite easy for other guys to have decent customer service. Act like you have a pulse and you’re miles ahead. But seriously, I think a big chunk of the NLE market is there for the taking. I’m doing a lot of Avid work at the moment and I’m appreciating what they do but am also very interested in PPro since I’m such an AE fan. As for FCP X I couldn’t care less. Maybe it has it’s pluses but I see no reason to go through the effort.

But I think Walter Murch was on to something about an open source NLE so editors could steer the ship. I don’t think that’s quite a reality right now but if companies do allow the users to heavily influence the product and build what they want I think it’s win win. I think a partnership sort of speak between user an vendor is an excellent approach. Dictators can take a hike.

  • [Simon Ubsdell] “so if you think you can composite in AE then you don’t know compositing.”

Uh tell that to Mark Christiansen I think he did a lot of “The Day After” in AE and numerous other things. I don’t think that’s a fair statement at all. AE is a tool that does many many things with excellent results. If it comes up short use another tool.

And Motion is better for compositing than AE? Really? Motion to me is one of the most frustrating and poorly designed programs I’ve ever used.

I mean what is “compositing”? Basically somebody gives you a shot to do and it’s up to you to figure out which tool is the most efficient one to do it with, or maybe it’s many tools. Cumbersome for one person makes total sense for someone else.

  • Yeah and when you watch Andrew Kramer vids and how much you can do with all of those bundles plugins when you know what you’re doing it’s pretty f’ing impressive. I did a few pretty serious comps this last year and found myself using Nuke and AE as they both shine in areas where the other doesn’t. But if I could only have one program it would certainly be AE.

But yeah the mask feathering thing and also the ability to rotate and scale a mask like in Nuke would be awesome and really should be there.

Also I know a lot of people who’ve never touched Mocha. That program nails impossible tracks and is yet another freebie in the set. Blows the doors off Nuke’s planar tracker.

$1000 for an FCP 7 plugin? I hope their guys are working on MC and PP versions.

Kind of seems like they have nothing to gain and everything to lose.
