Nice well written post with a lot of good points. These are interesting times but it also seems like seeing a $3500 Smoke is the forbidden fruit or something. So tempting but to indulge is just the beginning of the end. I’m sort of amazed at my own reaction or lack of it. When Smoke for Mac came out I was like WOW! But it was too expensive and didn’t have batch.
Now miraculously it’s totally affordable with Batch more or less – which many speculated would never end up in Smoke for Mac – and I care less than when it was more expensive. Does dropping the price cheapen the whole thing? Was it the expense of video equipment in the past that made it exciting? I think to some degree yes.
But with $1000 Resolve, $3500 Smoke it’s like what’s next? A Rolls Royce for $75? Am I on to something or completely off? Are we watching the complete deflation of our industry?

I’m doing my first serious MC job and I’m liking it. I’m curious about PPro but very underwhelmed by 5.5. Adobe has a lot to prove we’ll see how they do. But you can’t go wrong with MC.

Pretty soon you’ll be able to buy a full camera and post package for 99¢. Kind of unreal.

April 16, 2012 at 5:49 am in reply to: Apple tells about features coming in 2012 to Final Cut Pro XYeah that’s the question isn’t it. Does FCP X evolve into FCP 8? If that’s what they end up doing more or less then they sure shed a few loyal customers along the way. I for one have moved on but I still like watching to whole scene with all of the actors play out. It’s a soap opera for geeks. It just needs to get a little romance involved.

[Frederic Warren] “It will be interesting to see what you guys think are the most important features missing from Smoke as you see more of it this week. I hope you will enjoy what you see.”

[Lance Bachelder] “Kool-aid’s delicious, but apparently not as strong as whatever you’re smoking…
“Seriously! The Smoke trackers blow the doors of AE. And I don’t know if there is no 3d tracker. Smoke 2012 has one but I don’t know about Smoke for Mac. But anyway compositing is not an area where Smoke comes up short and don’t you have to render CC in just about everything?

You can load up FCP key commands and all is bliss. The only problem is when you are used to the Smoke keys and you have to figure out where the Smoke commands have moved to.

That kind of blows when you have 100 of those files and many of them have the exact same name. The folder is intended to be the file name. I guess I’ll have to transcode in FCP.

Will P Pro 6 edit for me so I can sleep when the producer leaves?

This is interesting but if it’s a big change let’s hope it’s in price. If they decide to intro a new NLE well I hope they make it better than what they’ve had because I hate editing in Smoke, and prefer using FCP or Avid to feed it. And also at some point Smoke needs to settle down some. It’s kind of annoying to have to re-learn the thing after every release. I mean the Discreet group is more aggressive about changes than any other software group I know of they’ll totally re-arrange things over night. I’m all for improvement but they need to build a good system and leave it alone to some degree.
