I am just getting back to this issue after being away and some illness.
After checking on drives I was told about Seagate desktop external drives. You pointed out the best performance can be gotten by using three physical drives versus setting up folders within one drive or partitioning a drive. I also found that esata is the fastest connection. Finally, backup would require yet another drive or alternatively I could use blueray DVD.
Rendering takes forever right now. I can see where a drive dedicated to it would make a difference. Do you have a suggestion for the size of a such a “render” drive? or suggestions on size for the storage and software drives? I make home movies that run from 30 minutes to an hour or so. I use Sony Vegas Pro. Should I consider how full each drive should get before problems start happening?
Finally, I wanted external drives so that I could hook it up to the laptop when not at home, however, if you can tell me that performance would be much better by adding internal drives to our home computer, I may forgo external drives. That is if I can find local people who can help with installing the drives. We probably need help anyway with installing the esata drives.

I just cut my first DVD with Vegas Pro8 and Roxio for burning. I am waiting to receive the Architect in a couple of weeks. Couldn’t be happier with the results and that I didn’t spend a bundle up front, thanks to the good advice from this forum. My family loved the DVD. I am glad I found you guys.

Thanks for your advice. I just posted a response that I was able to order the CD only versions for Sony Vegas Pro edit and Architect from B&H for under $200. I poked around with Roxio and agree it is rudimentary…but then I am a beginner with all this and it did give me some insight. I am sure once I start to use Vegas pro more heavily this forum will be of great help.

Just want you to know that I contacted B&H and purchased the CD only version of Vegas pro 8. In addition I was able to special order a Architect CD only for 49.95. Thus the entire package below $180. They assured me that it is the exact same code as in the “full” package for over $400. Thank you for your time and effort, it is truly appreciated.

Thank you for your response. I will check out the B&H offer. I was hoping to use Roxio instead of Architect. It came with the computer. I still have the hrddrive from our old computer and will look into using it.
