I am a novice and am looking to purchase vegas pro 8. I see references to 8.0a and 8.0b on the internet. What are the differences? Also I saw the reference to a separate drive for editing videos. Will any external harddrive do? Or are there recommendations? Finally can vegas pro be purchased without the Architect? I saw some references where people purchased vegas 6 disk and the vegas 8 upgrade.
    I appreciate any help.

Vegas 8b is the latest update version of Vegas 8 pro. So you don’t have to choose between 8, 8a or 8b. You will always have the latest version.
If you own already a previous version of Vegas or Vegas movie Studio, you can purchase Vegas 8 pro cheaper (see the Sony website: https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/buy/upgrades

You can NOT purchase Vegas 8 pro without DVD Architect. However, you will need DVD Architect to put your videos on DVD.

A second harddisk in your PC is highly recommended, although I know some people who use a laptop with an external drive. But normally, an external drive is used for storage and back-up while the internal second drive is used for the footage in your project.

    “What are the differences?”

Check the Release Notes for a full description of the changes.
Generally you want to go with the newest versions due to the various bug fixes.

“Will any external harddrive do? Or are there recommendations”

My personal preference is anything from Seagate (great warranty!!).
You can buy cases that are USB only, firewire only or a combination of the two. Once again, it’s your choice.
I prefer the combo units as it doens’t limit me.

“Finally can vegas pro be purchased without the Architect?”

Until last week, the answer was no.
However, B & H just announced a special version of Vegas Pro 8 all by itself.
Note that this link is to a page with several different options with the cheapest being Vegas Pro 8 for $130.00.
Be advised that, since this doesn’t get you DVD Architect, you won’t have MPEG-2 or AC-3 render options.
You can buy a different authoring app, DVD Architect Studio from B&H (limited version of DVD Architect) or go the Upgrade to Vegas Pro from Vegas route direct from Sony for an additional $235.00.
At a total of $405.00, this is still cheaper than buying the full package from B&H or Sony.

Thank you for your advice. I was hoping to use Roxio instead of Architect. However, I have not yet worked with it. Roxio came installed with the computer.
    Sure appreciate your help.

Thank you for your response. I will check out the B&H offer. I was hoping to use Roxio instead of Architect. It came with the computer. I still have the hrddrive from our old computer and will look into using it.
There is quite a bit to learn and I appreciate your help.

Since you are just starting with video editing, you might consider to purchase Vegas Movie Studio Platinum instead of Vegas 8 Pro. This is much much cheaper and has a lot of the possibilities of Vegas pro. By the time you get addicted to editing, you can simply upgrade to Vegas pro 8 (or maybe version 9 by then…)

Any software that comes pre-installed or with the computer or DVD burner you can be sure it’s either an old version or not the full version. It’s a teaser to get you to buy the full version.

Believe me you’re better off with Vegas and DVDA because they intergrate extremely well. You can render an MPEG-2 in Vegas especially for DVDA.

I get much better results by using the matched set than by using something like Roxio or Nero to burn my DVD’s.

Just want you to know that I contacted B&H and purchased the CD only version of Vegas pro 8. In addition I was able to special order a Architect CD only for 49.95. Thus the entire package below $180. They assured me that it is the exact same code as in the “full” package for over $400. Thank you for your time and effort, it is truly appreciated.

Thanks for your advice. I just posted a response that I was able to order the CD only versions for Sony Vegas Pro edit and Architect from B&H for under $200. I poked around with Roxio and agree it is rudimentary…but then I am a beginner with all this and it did give me some insight. I am sure once I start to use Vegas pro more heavily this forum will be of great help.

Robert, be advised that what you’re getting is DVD Architect Studio and not DVD Architect Pro.
There are differences between the two but, for now, Studio will probably meet your needs.

    Hi Robert
You’ll get all the help you need and then some here. his forum is where I learned 98% of what I know, especially about Vegas and DVDA all the way back to Vegas 3 or 4, don’t remember now.
