This is a very old post by now and lots of people added some good advice. I had been very dissatisfied with Sony Vegas 10/11 at the time and couldn’t figure out why I had to rip my hair out for it. A long time ago there was this piece of info in one helpful post.

It took a long while for me to notice it. As a result of getting a much more modern version of that video card recently I decided to declare publicly that I am indeed a fool. Had I seen this earlier, even better had I noticed the tiny, useless video card in my computer earlier, I would not have been so hard on Sony Vegas. My latest project had none of the problems i experienced before. It just goes to show you that one piece of the pie can be off and the whole pie is off. I can’t tell you the horrors I could have avoided.

I apologize for for putting this program down. I though I had tried everything. Mostly, in countless mean messages to the tech staff at Sony Vegas, I apologize here and now.

In all respects my system should have been perfect and on paper the old vid card did not raise any red flags. But looking at it as I put in the new one, it was plain as day. Thanks for the help everyone and Viva Vegas!

Advice: If you are having a problem you can’t fix take your computer to a shop with gaming experts. Have them look at your hardware!

To clarify, the crashes are program crashes and not system crashes. The system hasn’t had any problems.

All my files have been processed to 4:2:2 with Cineform. That has been the recommendation.

I’m using Cineform converted 4:2:2 from 4:2:0 SLR camera. I’ve found I can’t really layer more than a few effects without problems.

I know people love this program and I wish I could get mine to do what I’m asking it to do. Unfortunately I’m not there yet.

Thanks for the responses. I’m reading all of them and they are encouraging because there’s a glimmer of hope a solution can be found.

Like you my computer is dedicated. Was built for this purpose and is only used for this purpose. It has no speed issues and no problems with other complex programs such as the audio editor.

You are working with rather small file sizes in comparison. I’m using Neoscene converted 422 files that are quite large with hours of DSLR video from three camera.

This shouldn’t be hard for Sony Vegas Pro. But it is. I still have no proof it’s my computer. Looking though.

I am using the external drive for my editing files. I started out editing from the hard drive, but it was slow and lagged in virtually every aspect of normal editing. When I switched to the external drive the speed improved so that it was perfect. The crashing, blacked out clips, and other problems that existed before the switch however continued.

One note – I seemed to have a slight improvement when I updated drivers at the chip makers website. But that seemed to be short lived.

Once I had my whole project 28 minutes – 10 GB at the most in a single project I could no longer open it. It would crash on opening.

That was when I switched to 11. Which opened the file, but was so slow it was impossible to use. Then it started crashing.

I am open to the idea that the problem is on my end, but I haven’t heard anything to indicate that is the case. If it was a simple hardware fix it would be done already.

I’d be happy to recant my angry assassination of the character of SVP if the solution can be found here. Believe me I want it to work. I still need it and I need it to perform well. My project is that important to me.

Actually, Since Sony Vegas 10 had not been updated in many many months and I was at my whits end and ready to give up, I made a desperate move in the hopes that this was THE latest update.

Different look same great experience. Switched back.

I agree Matt. Vegas is intuitive and looks good. Functionally though, no software should require so much messaging to work correctly.

As I mentioned in my post, I am doing a project that would be less complicated and use less memory than a feature length film and I’m stuck with Vegas because I can’t recreate months of work.

I’ve tried to find the sweet spot. I’m still trying, but I’m at a loss.

Yes. I’ve considered those things. My system outperforms the required minimums to run Sony Vegas 11 and 10e.

I’ve researched the problems I’ve run into and I’ve found that there are plenty of other people who have had the same problems. Perhaps I am doing something wrong in my project, like editing up-converted 422 HD from a 60D SLR, maybe I should switch to low quality standard interlaced low end Sony handy cam video.

Oh wait. That would be dumb.
