What do you do regarding the “verifying” process when opening such large .dmg files? I assume you let them verify once, but then “skip” the step on future disc image moutning.

I’m impressed with FCP 2. I’m also impressed with the 8-core Mac Pro.

Having lived with a G5 2.0/DP for awhile, it’s easy to feel the extra power.

I have noticed a few more spinning balls on the 8-core. Sometimes popping up during a disc cloning or one time when I dropped a VO element into a FCP 6 sequence.

In all of these cases, force quitting the programs and eventually the finder did not help. A hard re-boot was required.

I believe I will refrain from doing anything else while cloning drives, and all other problems appear to be totally random. There might be something going on with the Sonnet e4p eSATA card and the drive bay, which is not quite ready for 10.4.9, because I have seen the same disc cloning challanges on the 8-core and G5 setups.

I will be getting into some heavy AE7 work on the 8-core early next week. I’m looking forward to the speed boost. Not running AE-CS here.

While I did not upgrade to FCP 5.1.4, instead sticking with 5.1.2, FCP 2 seems totally stable so far.

What do you use to make .dmg image files of your discs?

I was able to use Toast to make disc images, and they worked fine. It really comes in handy when installing FCP on more than (1) rig.

I would also note the install time is greatly reduced compared to using the DVDs. Of course there is the dics image burn time, but on (20 or more installs, the disc image install nests less install time, with no disc swapping.

I have been working on a couple of systems setup with the Sonnet eSATA bays & PCI x/e cards. They are on a spankin’ new 8-core as well as a couple of G5 2.0/DP dinos. 🙂

Very easy to set up.

I have a Sonnet Fusion 500 at my home studio, so I can do homework very easily.

The only down side to the Sonnet is it’s limited RAID format support, but I maintain a working back-up drive as I work thru projects.

One of my clients needs to add some additional ultra-scsi drives to his AVID Adrenaline. Ouch!

OWC explained the difference this way…

… the less expensive “qualified” ram will perform the same as the “certified” ram.

The certified ram has the right to have an Apple Certified logo associated with the product. Perhaps Apple then gets a license fee for every stick of gum, I mean ram.

I don’t see any advantage as far as working thru a future problem with Apple tech support, because Apple is not going to replace the OWC certified ram. The owner will still have to seek replacement ram from OWC.

I spoke candidly about using 3rd party ram when I ordered the 8-core from the Apple Business folks, and they were supportive of our decision. They wished they could sell the Apple ram at a more competitive price, but agreed 3rd party ram is OK to use if bought from the handful of vendors we have mentioned.

The 8-core is priced very competitively and we went with the X1900 and 16GB of ram for our new AE, FCPro workstation.

Certainly, a new memory buss & multi threading design could make an 8-core even more efficient. But again, once you embark on the waiting game, one can procrastinate years away.

If your digitizing “wild” with 2GB file size limits or camera edit file limts, does this renaming feature rename the main file and ALL of it’s linked sub files?

I agree this is a great feature, something I have wished for on numerous occasions, not believing it wasn’t included. 🙂

My upgrade is supposed to arrive Tuesday. I’m looking forward to working with the new software.

May I just offer… anytime you have the fans run wild on the G5, it’s usually points to a hardware issue.

On my 2.0ghz DP G5, I needed to have both processor replaced and calibrated to solve my problems.

If you can get a hold of the service tech hardware test DVD, it will usually tell you what hardware is at fault.

I ended up buying the Apple Tech Service Training Program so I could have my own copy of the test DVD.
