yes!
I found the bad media file late last night, after rendering everything else on the timeline (90 minute show) piece by piece.
thanks!

And I should also metion that if I do not try adding handles in the batch capture window, that is, I uncheck the “add handles box,” the media start/end point still moves by a few frames when I recapture. Sometimes, not always.
thanks again

Thanks for all your input, it is greatly appreciated, and this is all something I will definetly keep in mind for my next project. (and it’s also really good to hear the other side of the SDI v. FW debate because over here all I’ve got is the pro-SDI camp). I agree that your proposed solution seems far easier than what I am now faced with. But SDI capture and subsequent pulldown removal is the path we are committed to for this show (the director likes it, the post-advisor likes it, the post-house likes it) and I need to find solutions for this path. But when this is over I’m definetly going to test your idea of the chroma smoothing filter and rendering in an uncompressed timeline for my own benifit. I’ll let you know how it turns out with our footage.
Thanks

November 23, 2005 at 5:00 pm in reply to: Advanced Pulldown, Cinema Tools, and SDI captureWhy capturing over SDI is the only option for us-
We “offlined” all of our clips using FCP Advanced Pulldown removal DVCPRO clips (whole show at 23.98). Now that we are about to take all of our DV and uprez it to HDCAM, we are recapturing the entire show via SDI because this footage looks better after the uprez. The tests have been done at the post house and SDI DV uprezed is far far better (less jaggy edges, crisper lines, better reds, less chroma bleeding) than FW Advanced Pulldown removal captured DV uprezed. I’ll be honest that I only sort of understand why, but my eyes are not lying to me, SDI + uprez to HDCAM = better.
So, this leads to me my advanced pulldown removal problem. Must capture SDI, must remove pulldown.
[Graeme Nattress] ” as soon as you try to go over SDI you’ve lost your flags and you’re going to have a hell of a time mucking around removing pulldown.”
I’m going to be honest and admit that I don

Thats what I thought, thanks.

I had been checking the EDL after importing it into FCP. I just tried your technique of using TC reader in the original sequence, and dang, the EDL is still way off when I check it against the clips. But that was a great suggestion, thanks very much.
And taking out my clips with speed changes hasn’t helped either.
I’m going to reinstall FCP 5, and then I’m gong to offer my G5 the blood of many male chickens, in hopes this will appease the Gods of Apple.
Thank you for all your suggestions!

Hmmm…
I am taking out my speed changes as we speak, so we will see if that clears it up.I’ll let you know!
All the clips were captured with advanced pulldown removal in FCP, not using Cinema Tools. I will check my media start/end TC against the tape and let you know.
You wrote -“I did not use such wokflow so far for 24PA, but exporting a 23.98 sequence with clips captured with advanced pulldown remvoval seems to give a good timecode.” Does this mean that you have had good TC when exporting the 23.98 sequence, or you think it SHOULD be good TC? I am exporting a 23.98 sequence with clips captured with advanced pulldown removal and I’m NOT getting good TC. I’m getting fictious TC.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

We will not online in FCP, I am hoping we will be uprezing our DV to HDCAM and color correcting in the Quantel eQ.
Wait a minute, if it’s 20 year old technology, shouldn’t they have gotten it to work by now? (ha ha)
I’ve also tried exporting the sequence as XML, and the TC is great when I do this…..but about 25% of my clips are missing. Why?

Wow, thanks so much, that was very helpful. I’ll use this workflow in the future!

Yes, the audio is uncompressed. In the past I have had audio sync drift issues (drifitng in and out over ten minutes or so) when using AC3 audio. And I’ve never had a sync problem with uncompressed audio. Why is it that my uncompressd audio is suddenly jumping out of sync? And if AC3 is the only solution, how can I avoid sync drift in the future?
thanks kindly
