Wynn touched on a big issue. The 7D overheating a few times through the course of a single day’s shoot is an inconvenience …having to endure the same over the course of three years (though somewhere along the line you’ll probably update to a newer production camera) would lead to undue stress and insanity.

The client may be looking at proposed picture quality linked to price point, but this inexpensive camera workflow could very well cost them much, much more in downtime, missed shots/story, and post-production. These are issues we as shooters should always bring as pre-production council to a client for their well being and overall satisfaction at the end of a job.

A colleague of mine is due to prep a show on a 5D MkII using an on-board monitor and splitter situation. Once I hear how it goes for him I will see what I can do about typing his success or hardship here for present info and future progeny.

If anyone here has updated info on the workflow and can beat me to it I too would like to hear about it.

I’ve not heard of any Medium format / video hybrid to date. While it is not to say that we won’t see such a technological move in the future, right now the 35mm Digital Still/Video hybrids are a result of news agencies desiring more capability out of their field photographers at press events, junkets, and the like.

The 5D MkII and 7D from Canon were not intended for independent filmmakers, it just happened to be prove too much of a cost effective tool for them to avoid. The medium format market does not have the same possible advantage given that a digital back for a medium format camera that only does stills is well outside of the price range that indie filmmakers would even consider. Somewhere around $17,000 I think? Truth be told it has been a while since I have priced out digital backs for medium format cameras.
