Until then, it seems to make sense as you are editing that it must be a good thing to see the entire HD video in the preview window, particularly when looking at effects and keying. It may not make the world a better place, but it may be easier on our tired eyes seeing ‘retina’ images rather than what we are used to. So I think for image display it will be good even more professional to have a pixel perfect rendition. It remains to be seen how easy it will be to edit on a 15″ screen though where the physical real estate is smaller than than 17″ most would use previously. At home or in the office, you may want to edit on your larger desktop screen (you know the much larger screen with less pixels), but when traveling, may be more challenging.

Jason, the MacBook Pro Retina screen is 2880×1800 pixels. When you play a HD video without magnification, it’s only going to play in an area that uses 1920×1080 pixels. Same when you display a graphic image. You should be fine. I admit the new System Preferences/Display panel, the dumbing down of the selections presented to the user on the right is quite confusing, but on the left I believe it indicates the pixel dimensions. You want to set your display to its native resolution of 2880×1800 and capture your HD image in an HD window within that larger screen using a program that just captures the image, not the screen. Is this what you need?

You may know they did very recently purchase an Israeli chip design firm. And we don’t know what they’re up to. Apple could swallow up ARM if they wanted and they clearly love ARM’s mobile chips but they chose this small Israeli firm for some advantage.

Way off topic but your comments prompt me to say that I for one support Apple is this competition with Google. My version of Google’s motto is “We do evil every day.”
After the naive Steve Jobs entrusted Apple’s Director Eric with the keys to the palace, Eric thanked him by doing his best to steal the cutlery, drink the wine, and poison Steve’s favourite dog. Absolutely no scruples in a position of trust. And Steve still met with him for coffee in public when it was all over and didn’t shoot him–incredible restraint.
I’ve done all I can do personally by no longer using Google’s search engine. After the international stealing of personal WiFi networks while preparing their Google Mao street views, how can anyone trust their intentions?
Your post does raise many good points however and it’s very important to remain humble and wary of one’s own success. END OF OFF TOPIC.

Christopher, since the next generation MacBook ProbRetuna is available, I suspect Barefeats will have some benchmark results within the month. Not sure if they would specifically address Resolve performance.
Looking forward to the results some of the creatives will be posting here about their hands-on tests since I’m sure some will be buying the new laptop.

Michael, the MacBook Pro Retina includes the NVIDIA 650M which supports CUDA. That could be a strong selling point for the new laptop for creatives. Will be very interesting to see how well DaVinci Resolve works with the MBPR’s new NVIDIA graphics capabilities.
