  • Bill, the new ASUS 4K monitor is about $4,000. So it would be sweet if Apple can bring that down to a number they like, such as $999.

Like the old Power Mac G5, whose box general physical design lasted from October 2003 to (likely) October 2013, today Apple has shown the tube they expect to stay with another ten years. Today just 2 screaming GPUs and 12 CPU cores and unknown internal storage and memory and everything else pretty much dependent on just 6 Thunderbolt 2 connectors with some USB3s for good measure. It’s a start and in time the tube may stay the sane but the internals won’t. What is the speed if your current 16-lane cards. Do you really think TB 2 is the last version of TB? It might be the last to use copper but speeds are coming that meet or exceed the PCIe bus. You are entitled to feel chagrined losing those internal user-installed cards, but I hope you are not driven to despair!

Lance, did you see the post from Grant Petty about the new Mac Pro and the performance of Resolve 10 using the new version of OpenCL? In a word, “screaming.” Until I read that post I was feeling nervous, but I trust Grant.

We don’t know a lot about the 2 GPUs it will ship with except they each have 6GB GDDR5 video memory and have more bandwidth than AMD’s top-of-the-line S10000, so lets wait about four months before pronouncing it useless. And not all of the cards that people are used to require 16 lane PCIe. I don’t know the significance or impact of using PCIe 3 but I assume it helps too.

Check the thread topics, but “New Mac Pro of Not: Debate” sounds like a good topic to start. I’ll bring out the best in Herb, Walter, Chris, so many famous names! Go for it.

In my opinion it’s a fake to see how many sites will pick up the non-existent story. Sorry but the fonts are wrong, the shading is wrong, the relationship of the typefaces is wrong so without reading the copy, it just isn’t real. Now that doesn’t mean the new MacPro won’t look like that to some degree but that is not any web page Apple marketing would use.

It should be interesting in the few hours before the keynote when sometimes the accurate images are leaked. Have a good sleep, people. I hoe all your dreams come true.

You might look on the official Blackmagic Design forums for these things.

I certainly hope Apple is not coy next week at the WWDC about their plans for the redesigned Mac Pro. That and the immenent release of footage from the BMPC4K will help determine if I go for the 4K camera or the BMCC MFT which we now know will finally be released as early as next week! Quite a week coming up, quite a year if Apple is also going to join those several firms trying to make 2013, the year of 4K. I personally think that makes much more sense to a broad market compared to the push last year for 3D everywhere. As you mentioned, 4K acquisition can be very important even if deliverables are still 2K or HD. I am looking forward to being able to generate 4:4:4 colour from 4K acquisition after having been stuck in a 4:2:0 HDV world.

[Craig Seeman] “Of course it may well be a year before we see a significant number of peripherals using TB2 but it does mean some will have to think about the longevity of their computer purchase.”

Intel seems to be pushing this towards those who are working with 4K video files and 4K monitors. With the Blackmagic Production Camera 4K about to be released in July 2013, it shouldn’t be too long before some people will appreciate having the TB2 capabilities. TB2 may not be necessary for the BMPC4K camera workflow, but it won’t hurt to have a bigger pipe. And who knows if Apple will be outing a 4K monitor before long to match the redesigned Mac Pro. If not, other options will be there. Again, may not be necessary, but will help make everything run smoothly.

  • Edgar, look like good introductions but i was wondering are these books optimized for the iPad retina display? No mention of that in the description.
