The 12 cores claim made me think it must be dual 6-core CPUs but Apple didn’t explicitly say that. Other people are claiming it is only a single 6-core hyper threaded processor, so really just 12 threads. I can’t believe the reality distortion field under Tim Cook is going to claim 12 threads is the same as 12 cores so still hoping there is a single 6-core option and a dual 6-core offering. But we know even the entry-level Tube will have two GPUs!

You know I don’t even know the CPU codes they will be using. That would clarify things. Since they appear to have made a custom AMD FirePro GPU, maybe they convinced their good friends at Intel to make them a custom CPU! Nothing would surprise me. I’d do it if I was the CEO at needed to be able to distinguish my product from those rapacious Linux and PC powerhouses.

The specs for the custom GPU in the Mac Pro Tube appear to meet or exceed their top card, the S10000.

Andrew, yes I meant Resolve 10 would run better on the Mac Pro Tube AMD FirePro with the latest OpenCL than any other Mac! Certainly it may not keep up with other platforms but as you suggest, it may be a good option nonetheless. Will be fascinating when the benchmarks appear in about four months.

Walter, you are right about the impact of the GPUs. You may be right I am reading too much into his comments but this is the quote from Grant that made me think the tuning to the latest OpenCL was important:
“there is a whole new OpenCL and DaVinci Resolve 10 has had a lot of performance work done to integrate it…”

Al, Rohit Gupta of BMD has confirmed that Resolve 10 noise reduction will run on the new Mac Pro AMD GPUs with the new version of OpenCL.

David, I altered my post to make it clear that I was not another naysayer based on the preview we saw. I see how you could have thought I was being critical when I intended to support the design previewed. Hard to convey a tone of voice in a written post. Thanks.

You know I think the Museum of Modern Art or the Smithsonian will be acquiring one to put on display. If the word ‘iconic’ will be applied to a computer design, this one deserves to take the cake. When you get this home, the first thing you are going to want to do is remove the cylindrical cover and spin it around to reveal the ghost in the machine.

BMD is certainly stepping up to 4K beginning with content creation in 4K on the BMPC4K camera due to ship in a month or so. That includes 6G SDI 10bit one a single port. Several of their other products have been revealed to already include support for 4K or have recently been announced to offer 4K. I think in the next year or less, several of the key suppliers of video gear will ensure they have their devices handle 4K either through 6G SDI or TB2, I just read the other post that indicates Apple may finally be supporting 10bit natively so that is very good news too. Ten years is a very long time for an architecture, but I believe Apple will stay with their Tube for ten years while continually improving the performance of the guts and interfaces (and likely new calibrated 10bit retina monitors) while third parties feast on providing the plethora of external gear.

Andrew, BMD have already indicated they are getting Resolve 10 tuned for the new Mac Pro via it’s latest iteration of OpenCL. Of course Resolve will run on other systems, but it sounds like it may run best on the new Mac Pro.

It does sound surprising to some people that Apple is not offering more cores than their current Mac Pro. However a system is the sum of its parts and it does appear to be designed for overall throughput with the very fast flash PCI SSD, fast memory that uses compression on idle memory before paging to that very fast SSD, very very capable dual GPUs with up to 6GB of video memory each! So much disappointment reflected in many of the posts here when Apple has shown quite a lot of information in their preview of the device, but it is still just a preview. The dress has been raised to show an ankle, but there is a lot of leg left to your imagination.

Personally I am not disappointed and the breaking news form Alex Gollner’s blog is that the machine is user configurable and will be serviceable so that the custom base architecture allows the cards to be upgradable.
