Ever since DVD Studio Pro came Apple we have used CBR 6.3 mbps for anything that we encode in compressor. We bought BitVice to save us on a couple long encodes, but CBR in Compressor has been our friend.
CBR is easier on playback for DVD players so discs won’t skip. Same with AC3 audio…it is the native chipset in DVD players so it streams thru the player effortlessly. Feed a DVD player PCM audio and it has to run it through a different audio circuit making it prone to freezes.
Noe, on long encodes we sometimes just feed a video signal to a Sony DVD recorder and put it on a longer encode setting and let ‘er rip. We get acceptable encodes this way and it is a no fuss way to make the encode…we then use MPEG streamclip to demux the M2v and AC3 from the disc for authoring.

Also most of those DVDs originate with 24 fps material with no fields so they have a 20% gain on quality per second because of the reduced frames. They also encode from a very high rez source. I believe they also use encoders that support segmented encoding so they can go back and encode short segments into the final encode to fix trouble areas…much better than a simple 2 pass VBR.
Add in a dual layer disc and you can keep quality very high.

IF you have Snow Leopard, there is a special install on the disc to allow you to install what is QT 7 Pro…this will give you all your functionality back that you used to have.

Try exporting out of FCP with QT Conversion and scale the movie down to 720 x 480 widescreen Prores 422. Then take that file thru Compressor using just about any DVD encoding setting and see if that doesn’t fix the type. Extra step but works for us on any HD interlaced material going to Compressor for DVD. 720P 60 seems to behave…only the 1080 interlaced stuff mucks up the text on downconverts no matter what we do in Frame Controls in compressor.

Did you try opening one of the sequences in QT player and export from there? Just as a test to see if there is actually something going on with the sequences.
What is your preferred output format and size out of compressor?

I have learned the caveats of Social Media but was really wondering if anyone has forged a strong relationship with a freelancer or who found that working with a full service web company was the smarter route.
Also, by saying that you are implementing it in house, was there already some website acumen that you had cached over the years and felt comfortable, or did you just jump in Zelin style and go for it?

Exactly. We do this a lot as well. Feed the DVD recorder an S-Video signal and set it to record to the correct length. Use MPEG Streamclip to export sections using the In-Out keys (I and O) Demux to MP2 and AC3. Author in DVD SP.

However, if you foresee that you will be doing a lot of file converting and compressing to other formats it might pay to invest in Episode for Mac which is a complete compression app and actually compliments Compressor on our desktops quite well.

Did you try a test with say, 10 files and see how that goes? Also, why not give MPEG Streamclip a try for your conversions?
