Hey Jonathon, which Nikon lens adapter do you use? is it one that you have to screw the adapter to the lens? That seems kind of inconvenient. We are looking for the right one.

No issues. Color effects etc might take a little longer to render than the same effect on a ProRes clip, but it plays nice this way.

I have only duplicated, not replicated a dual layer project so I don’t know about the issues. With similar lengths of clips for each side, the split point should be pretty seamless.

ACTUALLY just drag in one of the pro res clips first to establish the sequence setting, then double check it to make sure all is well, then you can start cutting in the XDCAM.

When we use XDCAM with ProRes we just make the sequence ProRes and the XDCAM cuts in nicely. However, you could also convert the XDCAM to ProRes LT and you won’t see file sizes so large. Did you convert them to ProRes HQ?

No need…I’ll bet the ProRes LT will look great and play very nicely with the other ProRes footage.

I just did a project like this but had 21 hours of lectures that all fit on four dual layer DVDs. I used BitVice to encode at 3-4 mbps which looked very good. With that bitrate you can expect almost 2 1/2 hours per layer which nets about 5 hours per dual layer disc, enough for your project for sure.

But I don’t think compressor is up to the task. It can do it but running as low as 3-4 mbps VBR is gonna look crunchy out of Compressor.

BitVice does this very well. I think Episode 6 with the MainConcept engine can do it as well.

We have eSATA JBOD enclosures to put hard drives on sleds in for backups. We have currently 30 hard drives from 500 gigs to 1 terabyte. For each of our in house drives I have a clone of that drive that I keep in a fire case at my home in cool, dry storage. I run the drives every 2-3 months. We use a simple drive catalog software (DiscCatalog Maker) on the Mac.

This has worked for us. The drives are convenient to load up and make quick changes if a client asks for a DVD with last year’s spots for example. This just happened. I loaded the backup drive, encoded the files right from the drive, built the DVD back to that drive and made some discs. Could not have done this from the cloud.

I’m sticking to this until tape backup can store 100 gigs or more of data per tape and can mount like a drive on the desktop and be easily added to and read from. Might be a few years….

If I have this right, FCP is not actually scaling the footage 133% even though the motion tab says so. When FCP distorts the footage to get the correct aspect to 16:9 from the anamorphic frame of the 1440 clip, it does the math on the vertical scale, effectively shrinking the image vertically, then it has to scale it back up to fill the frame….but in the end, all it has done is stretched the footage horizontally across the frame. You don’t lose resolution doing this. So I think you’re fine. However it might take less processing if you add effects etc on these clips but you’d have to test it.

Also using an encoder like BitVice or the new Episode 6 might yield better encodes.
