Did you upload the original footage via firewire form the DVCAM? As for the color Smoothing it depends on how it was shot and how you think the image looks overall on your NTSC monitor. Your eyes should be the judge here. How does it look to you?

To determine if your alcohol is “pure” enough for a good cleaning, just take a sample and pour a little puddle on a glass surface…let it dry completely. If it leaves a white residue it will leave that on your heads. Try a different product. We use to use an excellent cleaner that was banned on the old 1 inch machines and it worked perfectly and left absolutely no residue. Now cleaners that pure are harder to find, but the 99% isopropyl works pretty good.
A good cloth is key as well. Wet the cloth a bit, spin the heads and apply the wet portion to the heads lightly, keep the heads spinning so you get 6-10 solid revolutions. Wet the cloth in another spot and do the same thing, this time paying attention to how much dirt ends up on the cloth. If it is clean you are good to go. I usually clean the other heads and rollers with a clean part of the cloth with some alcohol…be sure to wipe them with a dry part when you are done.
We used to clean all of the machines, Beta 1 inch and Digibeta every morning. They were meticulous.

I cut the first track, then I cut a second track over it on V2. This way I could see the edits below and what they were by the clip name. I was cutting between interview clips and product clips. Mine was a 2 screen production, but it would work for three. Sometimes the interview was on the left sometimes the same shot was on both screens, and sometimes there were two different broll shots on screen. You could have more fun with the three screens...albeit more work : ) I duplicated the 2-layer sequence and applied PIP to all the V2 clips with them on the left side and a similar PIP on V1 clips and put em on the right side. This is how the client saw the finished piece. Actually on the first few passes I did an over-under PIP, which would work pretty good with 3 layers. Took a little rendering but worked great...the client loved it and it won several awards. They used Betacam decks on site which were all controlled by a PC and synched perfectly. Hey AG, since you’ve gotten some attention to your question, why not output both formats, re upload at DVDPro50 and let us know which one compares closest to the original program on the original timeline.

This is exactly why Avid has bundled Boris Red (Avid FX) Softimage LE (Avid 3D) and DVD Studio (Sonic) in their Xpress Studio HD….they really want you to use those effects in the offline so you will be pretty much stuck finishing on another Avid. Oh, yea, they know what they are doing.
There are a lot of features that Automatic Duck brings across, but Avid really want you to use their products throughout the post process.
This will continue to be the trend…finding ways to lock you into a given app, regardless what converters are out there…and you can bet they will not allow XML to transfer all the important stuff.
If the Avid offline editors are doing Animatte, lots of boris etc I think it will be a hard…real hard sell, to go with a FCP online. I don’t think I would even buy into it.

Another way is to lock the Camera’s Point of view to the null, then wherever the null goes, the camera “looks”. then you can animate the camera by raising and lowering it and it will either be looking down at the null’s position or up at it.

What is the price for an entry level DVPro50 deck? I think Panasonic is missing the boat on their excellent DVCPro50 codec. When Apple announced the partnersip to support DVCPro50 digitizing and output via firewire Panasonic should have announced a $3000 deck. Anyone know what the current lineup is? What are you using and how is it working?
I have two clients that shoot DVCPro50 but both output to BetaSP for Station dubs. I could have a leg up if I offered DVCPro50 Mastering.

Here’s the secret on an ol’ 1800SP deck. Take the Y component signal and run it to the Ref input on the deck…now take the Ref loop out and take a short BNC and run it to the Y input on the deck. Be sure the Ref input is not terminated by turning off the 75 ohm switch.
This will do it. Sounds funky, but even the horita black burst won’t always wlrk this way, but using Y from the board to the Ref in and looping it back to the Y input on the deck always works.
