  • Color Smoothing for Quality (DV to Betacam SP)

    Hi all,

I’ve been working in DV format (sourced from DVCAM via DV/NTSC) for a television show and now it’s time to master it down to Betacam SP. Normally, I would use Media Manager, create a new offline higher-res project (eg, sequences) and recapture via the SDI port on my DSR-1500A (using my Kona 2). But I don’t have time to go through that exercise.

Question: will using the 4:1:1 Color Smoothing filter on the various segments help the quality of the final product as I print it to Betacam SP on the UVW-1800? I’m rendering the filter on the timeline as I write this (in anticipation that it will help the overall mastered output).

    Thanks for your help.

Did you upload the original footage via firewire form the DVCAM? As for the color Smoothing it depends on how it was shot and how you think the image looks overall on your NTSC monitor. Your eyes should be the judge here. How does it look to you?

    Thanks, Rich.

I found the thread in the archives that discusses 4:1:1 sampling, DV from SDI sources, and color smoothing that G. Natress et al participated in. I think I found my answer there. I have an SDI out from my DSR-1500A, but due to a time crunch, I don’t have time to use Media Manager to create a new project with only the necessary clips and reload via SDI. I’ll have to duplicate the timeline, change the settings to uncompressed, add the Color Smoothing 4:1:1 filter and print to Betacam SP.

Anyone want to chime in with their perception of the quality increase when using the chroma smoothing on DV footage when mastered to Betacam SP?

    Thanks,
    Tim
