I might try a CBR setting on each somewhere on the low side, maybe around 4mbps. That will push the compressor to deal with motion at a low steady bitrate. Use the same footage, maybe 2 minute clip of various shots. Have at least one fade to black in there somewhere, and a long dissolve, like 2-3 seconds.

Then do a VBR multi pass with similar settings on each….things to look for here are final file size to see which one crunches it down more, but still looks good. Plus how long it takes.

BitVice doesn’t do AC3 which compressor does, so you will have to do audio in another app.

I’m very curious to see how BitVice holds up to the CinemaCraft…

  • Admittedly there are a few who have a tendency to come across as the end all to a posed question on these forums. They might seem less than helpful. But I think everyone here means well.

I do wish that “some” would curb the condescending answers, especially when someone is pretty obviously probing for more info.

I suggested it to a Panasonic rep. They are all ears right now because they really want tape to go away. I suggested making it a pref on the camera…kind of like a record pause setting so the camera operator could determine when a clip is continued and when it starts a new clip.

Then, once your clips are in, another software update for Log and Capture that would allow you to string clips together as long as the timecode was continuous.

    We can dream…

May 22, 2008 at 1:44 am in reply to: Good editing mouse

I used a tablet (the old 6 x 8) on an AVID and AE long ago when we had two 4:3 CRTs sitting side by side. Somehow liked the action…no wrist issues.

I bought the wider 16:9 intuos and I cannot get the action right. It seems way too sensitive and i find myself hitting things that I didn’t mean to. I have it unplugged at the moment. I actually bought Painter Elements just for the tablet, along with Photoshop duties retouching etc. Again, used to love it, but can’t get this one to feel right. Might be that we now have a 24″ widescreen next to a 19″ 4:3. And with the wide aspect of the tablet it is a longer path from left to right and more work to manage it. the old 6 x 8 was a flick of the wrist from left edge to right edge.

I have scaled down the active area, but still….just doesn’t feel like the good old days.

I prefer the mighty mouse too, but I have a small hand and all the other fancy three button mice with their sculpted shape just don’t fit my hand.

May 18, 2008 at 12:36 am in reply to: capture errors, fcp 6.0.3

We just saw the same error with 6.0.3 for the first time ever. On the intel Macpro with a Kona 3 the error was “Tape Error” etc. We were uploading 50 minutes off a DVCAM via SDI to DVCPro50. NEVER happened before.

Then on another machine (G5 dual 2.7 with an Aurora Pipe) it was a new error, perhaps the streaming error. A third attempt on the Pipe system and it came in. Does seem to be a 6.0.3 issue. The Intel is Leopard, the G5 is tiger. both are QT 7.4.5.

May 16, 2008 at 1:38 am in reply to: Settings for Mastering to Pan. 1200a deck?

I have a completely different workflow…mostly since I don’t have the firewire option on my deck and I can’t find one anywhere…even Panasonic.

I bought a Horita Timecode extractor that takes the machine control out of the KONA breakout plus a composite video feed, then generates the timecode off the sequence as it plays back. I put the deck in external regen, crash record on the deck and hit play on the timeline. It lays down audio and video with HDSDI and timecode from the RS422 remote cable feeding the Horita box.

Clinky? Maybe….but without Assemble edit it the only way I could think of to make timecode matching outputs. Cannot insert edit however…

    Works for us.
