I tried your method, Stephen, and the file saved with VLC is superior! However, I have observed that when I use the Vegas screen grab I am saving a 1920X1080 pixel, 72 pixels/inch, RGB 8 bits/channel. If I save it as a snapshot, it produces a png file with the same parameters EXCEPT that it is at 200 pixels/inch. The png that is produced in VLC has THE EXACT SAME PARAMETERS as that produced with the saved Vegas snapshot, yet visually is significantly better. So how can two files with the same apparent resolution and bit depth look so different? For instance, the Vegas png looks washed out and the blacks lean towards the gray side, while the VLC file blacks are rich and the colors are vibrant. The VLC file also is MUCH sharper! How, then, did you get a jpg from Vegas when I am saving pngs? How are you setting up VLC to capture 24-bit files when I only can muster 8-bit images? I also cannot figure out how to move frame-by-frame in VLC, but perhaps this program is incapable of that. Would you kindly clarify your methods, as I now am on the right track? Would you please go into detail your step-by-step procedure? Thanks in advance, Stephen! This will help out quite a bit!!

With all due respect, Michael, I own an AX2000, and I can assure you that there are six Picture Profile settings. Some have the same options as the NX5U, others are similar and finally the NX5U has some additional options not available on the AX2000. My goal is to match them as much as possible for the shoot so that I will have significantly less in post to worry about. I am asking for anyone with knowledge or personal experience to help me perform this task.

Thanks for the advice, JR. I did not know that Blu-ray disks ALSO required Blu-ray formatting with it’s associated file system. I thought that I just could drop in the Video_TS folder that contains the SD VOB files. I now am that much more educated about this. To take it a step further, then, if I have a dual-layer, authored standard DVD and want to put this on Blu-ray, can I do so and keep the menuing system? Several colleagues have given their clients dual-layer disks and a few of them have had problems with this media, so I suggested that they may try to copy them to Blu-ray, and they asked how–oops! Any suggestions?

As with many of these problems, quite often the solution is neither clear nor simple. Unfortunately, Steve, un/re/installing Mercalli was an exercise in futility. Since there were several new program installs (which I really did not think would affect SVP 12 in any way, nor its plug-ins) as well as thirteen Win 7 updates, I performed a System Restore back to March 15th and methodically worked my way forward. After each program re-install I checked Mercalli 2, and after a few hours of reinstalling everything since the 15th I am pleased to tell you that all again is well. What happened?!! Beats me–I just can make an educated guess that there was an errant bit here or there that was causing Mercalli memory buffer errors (and I did see one or two in SVP the other day when I was not using Mercalli 2). I have no idea why the errors started occurring or why they now are gone, but in any event now all is well!! I just hope that these gremlins do not appear again for reasons unknown to me, but the bottom line is sometimes in order to correct these things a rollback and re-install is required!

That was the first thing that came to my mind, Steve, and I already performed a cold reboot. NO LUCK! Do you think that once again reinstalling both Mercalli and SVP 12 would get rid of this gremlin? If so, can I just reinstall without removing the programs? If removal is necessary, should I perform a COMPLETE uninstall with RevoUninstaller (which thoroughly cleans the registry, too, but may wipe out all of the presets and preferences that took months to perfect to make SVP 12 somewhat stable) or just go through Windows Control Panel for its so-so uninstall? I don’t want to muck up anything, if you know what I mean. Thanks.

So if there is no software to create a menuing system for files on a thumb drive, why can’t I just create NTSC DV AVI files to put on the thumb drive? Wouldn’t this be the easiest thing to do for those that don’t have a Blu-ray player yet want to view my SD project?

Thanks for the clarification. I just was not sure if Stephen was answering my question directly, but I now understand that ANYTHING put on a Blu-ray disk, be it video or just plain data files (such as jpegs), must be played back on a Blu-ray player due to the differences in lasers. So thank you, too, Stephen. If all of my intended recipients, then, don’t own a Blu-ray player, I guess I will just have to send them a load of DVDs if I want them to receive the authored version, correct, or is there any other way to record authored files other than on a DVD or Blu-ray (such as on a thumb drive or SD card)?

Great info, guys, but all of this STILL points to playing back Blu-ray-formatted files on a Blu-ray player. What about my primary question? Can one burn SD files on to a Blu-ray disk that is formatted as a DVD-Video (SD) AND play it back on a standard DVD player?? In other words, can a Blu-ray disk even be formatted for DVD-Video, and if so will this disk then play back on a standard DVD player??
