  • This was my list from a few months ago. Prices are less now. My advice is to skip the vmount battery system and get a battery with an integrated rail block. This is less expensive in the long run and won’t have to mount right behind your viewfinder. My company manufacturers these batteries. Tough as nails: https://www.ebay.com/itm/221399060449?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

    My accessories list:
Here were the essential items that I knew I needed to fully exploit the camera along with my very modest accessory budget (IN US DOLLARS:

    Camera – $2000
Lenses – $3000 (This line item could easily have been tens of thousands of dollars)
    Rail Mounting System – $300
Two BrikPower Batteries 5 Amp Hour – $450
    Charger – $110
    Zoom H4N audio recorder – $200
    Matte box – $500
Cage system with handle – $400
    2, Sandisk Extreme 480GB – $500

So the basic cost is around $7460

At the encouragement of Marco Solorio I managed to shave off about $2200 off the cost of implementing the camera.

But I did not include the $4000 of 4×4 filters I already own. You may choose not to use filters and rely on the effects within your NLE to achieve your own cinematic look. Your requirements will be a bit different but I thought the people who are considering a BMCC purchase should consider the TOTAL cost as they approach the purchase.

May 9, 2014 at 6:56 pm in reply to: BMCC & Paralinx Crossbow

The crossbow converts the SDI signal to an HDMI signal that is then fed to the Paralinx transmitter. Theoritically you could just put the HDMI signal into monitor. But, just a warning, the Crossbow does not support 23.98 frame rate. So if you want to monitor anything then it will have to be 59.94.

When we need that capability we re using a Blackmagic SDI to HDMI mini converter. A bit more expensive but it will convert virtualy any frame rate we need.

This is a job for a white room operation and not user serviceable. Any competent digital SLR repair center can do it. But be prepared for sticker shock – it will probably cost in the neighborhood of $100-$300 US.

    Here is how it’s done:

Never worked with 4K prores but I would think that you could convert to Prores proxy files for editing. Then reconnect and render at the end of the post process for each scene.

We almost never work with ProRes HQ files unless we are just doing a short commercial. The rendering on a long form project is just too painful. Also we never edit Prores on a long form movie on one long timeline. We have a different timeline for each scene. Those timelines are usually just a few minutes long. This allows us to divide the workload. As each scene is finished with the basic cut we can send that to post audio, custom music composition and even final color grading if we want to expedite the process. And when we are finished with the entire project we can work much faster to assemble everything with shorter single timeline layer Quicktime movies.

I would be interested in what other people have to say about their approach to 4K workflow though as we are about to purchase the BMD 4K as well.

Unless I’m mistaken you can eliminate EF-S lenses for your 4K camera since they typically only work with APS-C and smaller style sensors like the BMCC 2.5K. Larger Canon EF lenses should work on the 4K with minimal cropping. Also the Zeiss Distagon series should work well and provide superior optics. Marco Solorio did some great lens comparison work early on in the development of the BMCC and hopefully he will eventually comment here on his lens recommendations for the 4K.

Yep. Personally I find vaseline to be an absolute MESS to deal with. We have done some interesting EFX by Netting the back of the lens with a black stocking. It looks a little like a pro mist. But only a little. And you really need to stay away from high f-stop numbers because the pattern of the stocking will be seen in the light areas of the picture. Remember that I said it was interesting. Certainly not conventional. You be the judge. I like it for a few things. Very few.

Both Tiffen and Schneider make a variety of cinematic filters in a bewildering array of effects including fogs, promist, soft FX, and combo cosmetic filters that I will not live long enough to use due to the sheer number of available filters.

yes…I know…I went through the same thing. I complained to a friend of mine that the iris didn’t work. Then by happenstance I stumbled on the process. So I decided to read the manual entirely. Since they have combined the manuals for several cameras it can be a bit confusing as to what does what. But keep reading and eventually the clouds will part and you will reach enlightenment. If you stumble on any tricks be sure to post them on Creative Cow so we can all benefit. Onward!
