The “follow” composition in the Expression Sampler project has 9 solid layers. The first layer is called leader. There are no expressions on the leader.
Layers 2 – 9 are duplicates of each other. The expressions are built by Adobe, and they created their own effect (probably an animation preset) called “Delay” which is not to be confused with the audio effect. Here is a screen capture:

Sometimes duplicating the layer can be helpful. CMD/CTRL-D and you can select layers using the numberpad.

I would use the expressions sampler called “follow.”

Pre Comp your text. Then add a mask to the precomp. Then increase the feathering on the mask.
I say this alot Haha! After Effects has a particular render order: Source, Mask, Effect, Transformations (SMET). So when you precompose a layer, it is not like a group in photoshop. It changes the render order of your layers, turning into a source. So you need to precompose your layer and add a mask to the (newly created) precomp. However, all the “normal” animations you have already made will remain inside.

Just so you know…Adobe Illustrator also transitions easily into Adobe Indesign. And that software stack will do you well!

Heres the thing: Render order. It goes like this: Source, Mask, Effects, Transformation (SMET). AE does an additional weird thing: nulls are 0,0,0, but all the other source types are half of the resolution, eg. 960,540,0.
