    Still it isn’t as egregious as leaving the number only at the end, because…just hit repeat, and the number is waiting for you at the very beginning. You get your pen and paper while the person is rambling on, then when you’re ready to write, hit repeat.

    On my cell it’s “1”; on my office it’s “O.”

    I’m sure Nick’s correct and he’s talking about the negotiation process.

    Here’s one more thing to consider:
    If you work 40 hours per week, for 52 weeks, that equals 2080 hours. $10,000/2080=$4.81/hr. That’s not even the US federal minimum wage! $10k/year to be a virtual employee is a bargain. You’re saving them a pile of money and deserve to be paid.

    Standard maintenance & support contracts are yearly fees. You can measure response time and call back time.

    Example:
    Tier 1: $10,000, call back in 2 hours, can be onsite within 24
    Tier 2: $7,500, call back same business day, can be on site within 48 hours
    Tier 3: $5,000 call back within the week, on site per schedule and travel costs.

    Since a $10,000 lump sum is quite a bit of cash, you can get monthly payments, even pitching them as “interest free” as some incentive. Example: $10,000/12months is $833.33/month. You would need to (a) get a contract for maintenance and service agreement executed and (b) send monthly invoices.

    Also, if they pay month 1 and 2, but not month 3 and they need you for month 4, you need to figure out how you want to deal, here.

    In the business and marketing forum, folks are always saying “I’m not a lawyer.” In the cinematography forum, let me say: I’m not an electrical engineer 🙂

    My understanding is that the HDV is processed before it goes to tape.

    Regarding i/o via XHA1’s component video…doesn’t hurt to experiment. The manual says it’s 1080i (D3) — not certain what that means, since D-3 is very old school.

    But for a studio-type workflow, you might consider HDSDI and work in Apple Prores. Camera > i/o > apple prorez > RAID drives.

    Otherwise, for uncompressed HDSDI, an HDCAM deck and tapes are needed as well as some kind of offline/online workflow design…simply because of the amount of data. 1.5 Gbps is lot of information to store!

    Michael, I suggest you try the Apple Final Cut Forum (or some other editing related place on the Cow).

    In very simple terms, an I/O device stands for Input/Ouput Device. Essentially, video is an electrical charge running through copper wire. You can store that electrical impulse on tape. The i/o allows you to hook up the computer. It turns the electrical signal into a “computer file.”

    While it’s true HD-SDI is a lot of signal, before the signal can be saved to a computer, you have to tell the i/o device what kind of computer file it will be. That’s where we get all these nasty words like: DVCPro HD, MJPEG, HDV, Apple Prores, Uncompressed. Closely related to this is the data rate.

    The I/O device will work with your editing platform, so you can choose the codec and video file format you want to turn the signal into. (Does that make sense?!)

    Hopefully, you get a chance to experiment, but in general, as you move away from HDV and toward uncompressed, your file sizes should get really large.

    The people inventing this stuff are pure geniuses.

    at :54 I see a washed out image.
    at 1:32 I don’t see a lighting effect, just a normally exposed picture.
