The glass effect seems to do all the exact same things except it also has the highlights..so more i guess..I could be wrong

its a bit heavy on the render, but the easiest way would be to mask out the area around the lights and then use echo with a screen or add to cover up the rest of the car..by crushing the black…did i need to say that..

and are you sure the images that it slows down on are not HUGE? not reading from a hard drive? And not in ray trace mode in composition settings?
