Hi, thanks for the answers and support…I have managed to do all ok, accept I am seeing strange pulsing in sky and clouds, when I deliver, I am using BMCC PRO REZ, and some GH3 FOOTAGE ( drone )…In the timeline and on FCP all looks fine, checked original clips, and looked at Low Rez copies….ALL FINE…

I have to EXPORT or DELIVER in 2 Formats = One 422 HQ Pro Rez ( Original Quality )..

    And Also a .MP4 Copy…

The 2 CAMERAS should be fine together, the settings for DELIVERY look ok, the 1st time I tried it only made a 5min FILM and it 9mins and 32 Seconds..

Tried again and it DELIVERED fine, all looked ok when replaying on the SUITES GRADING MONITOR, but now I am home watching a copy, and I am seeing strange flashes around skies and clouds, a cream door does it, slightly RAINBOW like..

Any thoughts???? ( Thanks in advance ).

  • Hi there, I had the same concerns however the rate at which you shot at ie 50mbs is maintained there is a difference as you suggest and Bits and Bytes are indeed different along the lines of 4 to 1…

So don’t worry it’s an easy confusion which lead to me pulling out my hair as I had to maintain said bit rate for broadcast and feared rejection and raising it on here at 1st didn’t lead to the problem being solved but eventually with research and the help of a University Technician I soon learnt I indeed had no problem at all. I even tried all the different settings ie Native, HQ etc etc and got different readings which alarmed me further, alas that is why I didn’t delete the thread incase someone else had the same path and concerns…

I do hope everything goes well and do rest assured that the Mbps is indeed maintained..

I did find the MXF files from Canon a bit of a nightmare at 1st especially if they were not transferred using canons utility program or copied without said software and plug-ins and had no luck at first with Log and Transfer into FCP, especially as the XF305 at the time was newly released and the updates not available on Canons website but after a couple of phone calls to the canon help desk the update was soon available which answered quite a few issues. Basically the 422 Codecs are the same and the re-wrap into MXF files makes for slight compatibility issues, I would update my Canon Software if you are running version 1.0 as Version 1.1 addresses some of the early issues.. I went from Mini DV to tape less media and CF Cards for ease of use and at first had some real issues that could have been avoided and which made the whole process bumpy at 1st but once I got to grips with it all I didn’t regret going with XF305 at all, at 1st I questioned if I had indeed made the right decision but a year or 2 on and all is well…

Best regards and I hope all turns out well…

Hi what exactly is the problem? As if it was maintaining 50 Mbps in FCP then by pressing cmd 9 you see the clip info.. However what is written there says 22 m/bytes this is different to Mbps. If you shot in 50Mbps then this is what the clips will be.

So if you tell me more I will tell you how I over came it.

The Canon XF 305 has a Canon Utility Disk which you have to use to back up your clips, if not you run into problems with the MXF wrapper.

I had to use Sony XDCAM Transfer to get the footage into FCP by importing it. If you are looking to Log and Transfer then you have to make sure you have the Plug-In for the Xf305 ( update found on Canons website ) also the Canon Utility has an update from 1.0 to 1.1 on there site.

Get back to me with pacifics as I found it a headache as well. If it is what is in the threads title about maintaining 50Mbps then it is indeed maintained so don’t worry.

    All the best Ritch..

Great I hope you like it and did you indeed go with the XF from Canon ??

If so any help you need give me a shout…1 bit of advice go on their website for the Updates for the Utility Program and also Final Cut Updated Plug In also their is a Firmware update for the Camera itself, this is only for being able to get the Camera to Shoot to 2 CF Cards at the same time so you have 2 cards with the same footage etc, although after we spoke to Canon about Final Cut and their Media Back up Utility 2 days later a new update appeared which related to our enquiry..

We use LOG N TRANSFER but if you move or rename footage do it through the Canon Utility if not you can use Sony XDCAM Transfer but this isn’t ideal as sound issues etc…

The Slo-Mo that the Camera can Shoot In, with frame rate, Fps, Shutter Speed etc is absolutely brilliant with Superb results so far…

Let me know how you get on please..

August 8, 2011 at 10:28 pm in reply to: My take on Final Cut 7 and Lion.

Reading the Thread slightly confuses me but oh well, I wanted to know about the issues as I normally do Camera Work and some editing and have upgraded to tapeless media with MXF Files/Wrappers etc.

    As I said I do some editing and use FCP 7.0.3 ( fcs3 )

And infact a new IMAC is due to arrive for said editing which will obviously be shipped with the Lion OS.
So in my case the Computer Upgrade is not to obtain Lion but to make the editing process with FCP 7 a better faster experience as the lighter specs in our Macs and Laptops warranted a Desktop Upgrade…

I would be greatful if peoples editing experiences with FCS3 on a new Imac with LION has indeed proved to be problematic and if so in what way..

Is a dual boot with Snow Leopard what people would advise?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts..

August 8, 2011 at 10:12 pm in reply to: Getting 50Mbps from Canon xf305 into FCP ( How? )

Hi Rodney, I have had some good results with the Canon XF 305 infact I am just back from a shoot where we used 8 of them in a sports capacity where we used the Hd/sdi out for live vision mixing on site to a variety of Giant techno rainbow outdoor screens and also Hospitality monitors..

With regards to the MXF Files and Final cut apparently the 22mbps data rate is different to the 50Mbps I first started the Thread about, indeed the footage on export from FCP7 is 50Mbps etc…

Now the only downside to xf305 is having to use Canons Utility for back up of the the CF Card MXF format, as if then you want to search and copy a particular collection of clips or footage it has to then come back into Canons Utility and copied or moved via it’s Virtual Media back-up process ( this is not so in Avid or Premier Pro ) So in short if files are copied or re named, moved etc it must be through the Canon Utility.

This is the only negative on the Camera as we do a great deal of copying/backing up of clips/files/footage for multiple editors as the Sport has many positions on it’s course and is over 3 days, so each Rider needs to be compiled into a numbered folder so we can access all the footage pertaining to he or she for the edit..

The XF Quality and Versatility is very very good and the footage is of super Quality the 3sec buffer is also useful as is the Gen Lock etc etc and it is worth it’s price for what features it contains regarding the Broadcast requirements these days.. Whether for Progressive or Interlaced Spec requirements or the whole Data Rate range. The ability to quickly look at what the last clip contained whilst shooting is great, the new update means it can shoot 2 cards simultaneously.

The Camera is usable in a very straight forward set up either in Auto or semi auto, so is the whole Manual set up side…

I think it is for it’s price a great bit of kit, like wise the xf 300 & so is the 105 for that matter, also the Sony Ex is a good camera too.

I will give it a 8.75 out of 10… This is only not 10/10 due to the Utility Software issues mentioned above..

If you do have any specific questions I am happy to help, all the best and thanks for the Interest…. Ritch.

Well Im doing exactly that, Sony EXDACM Transfer adding the the file via add.
In FINAL CUT make a new project’ file Import You See in the list XDCAM click on that, go back to EXDCAM Press Import, Should work fine as it is for me…..

Make sure you have Plug In for your Camera for Final Cut found prob on it’s website….Apart from that I don’t know what to suggest, like I said it’s working for me and I shot with Canon and at 1st couldn’t see any MXF in Final cut until I did the above….

I can only say I had similar problems and instead of ‘Log and Transfer’ Imported the clip with XDCAM Transfer, and on the file menu selected Import>XDCAM…

This has aided me with MXF Files I couldn’t see before for editing for DVD’s.

I am using a Canon XF 305 so had to get a ‘Plug In’ for the ‘Log and Transfer’ and this has worked although I am not achieving the Bit Rate I shot in with Pro Res 4:2:2 ( HQ ) I need 50Mbps and at best am getting 22Mbps.

I hope my Info helps you!! I need the Bit Rate as It’s for Broadcast, so depending on your projects destination whether you can Import via SONY XDCAM TRANSFER which is free from Sony Site, do let me know if this helps…
